Much of the problem can be traced to stupidity at the power company. Line crews were laid off, the forecast was ignored, etc. I did have cell service, although I had to recharge the phone at Walgreens. 
I called Howard on Monday and asked him to PM Sparky about my situation and weather-enforced absence.
Seasonal/part-time work will at least bring in some cash. Keep up the IT hunt, too, something has to turn up eventually.
