Could happen. One has to wonder, though, about such things as the USS Intrepid, crewed by Vulcans in the original timeline. Since there are only about 10,000 Vulcans remaining in the Abrams version, who crews the Intrepid? Do the Vulcans adopt a new homeworld, or do the events of "Amok Time" take place in a refugee camp somewhere? Does the Spock from he original timeline share his no doubt vast technical knowledge and advance the Federation faster than it originally did? There are a tremendous number of possibilities in all of this.
