Ralph Bakshi - Never Forgotten: a Foster's Home Community

For those who aren't familiar with the name, or at least heard of it before, I'll make it as brief as possible.

Ralph Bakshi, in some ways, can be considered the originator of adult animation, long before animated sitcoms like "The Simpons", "South Park" or "Family Guy" gain popularity.

Originally, he worked at Terrytoons, producing well-known cartoons for CBS, including the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, Rocket Robin Hood and The Mighty Heroes.

After Paramount had Terrytoons closed down, Bakshi began to expand his area and in the 70s, would produce and direct the first adult animated movie, "Fritz The Cat", based on R. Crumb's own work. The movie, despite its shock appeal, made Bakshi famous, creating other well-known movies, including "Wizards" and "J.J.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Ring".

However, in the 80s and early 90s, Bakshi's fame declined, and by the time he did "Cool World" in 1992, he resorted to painting, which are now displayed in the Museum of Modern Arts. However, he's currently producing a new movie called "Last Days of Coney Island".

My opinion on Bakshi is that he's a creative genius, and if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't even have "Family Guy", "South Park" or any animated sitcoms to sit and enjoy. Sadly, I do feel he deserved a lot of recognition for what he did in the animation industry and the influence and impact he had on the industry as well.

hell yeah! I watched "Fire and Ice" just the other day!

Bakshi + Frazetta = Nerd Heaven.

Although, be honest, his flicks are't very good. "Wizards" and "LOTR" (both of which i own, along with Fire & Ice) are sub-par by anyone's standards. "LOTR" only redeeming moment was the trippy Nazgul scene.

Couple of notes:

Bakshi did start at Terrytoons. He was an inker and managed to work his way up to animator then director. He created the Mighty Heroes show for CBS then migrated to Paramount's animation studio (which like Terrytoons was based in New Rochelle, N.Y.).

Krantz and Grantray-Lawrence were the two studios that worked on the 1967 Spiderman cartoon (which aired on ABC), and Bakshi was at the Krantz studio (which did Rocket Robin Hood).

Bakshi got rave notices in 1987 when he did Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures for CBS. He wanted to do cartoons the old-fashioned way--driven by the artists, not writers by network committee--and it sprung a chap named John Kricfalusi who went on to greater notoriety with Ren & Stimpy.
