My New Spidey

This is my newest tarantula; I just got her shipped to me this past Thursday. She's an "Argentine Gray-Smoke", or more properly, a Grammostola alticeps, a species still quite rare in captive collections worldwide. She's a BIG girl, over 6 inches in diameter, but like most members of the genus Grammostola, she's very calm and gentle. I actually bought two of these, both females; this is the larger one. The smaller one, about half this one's size, suffered some sort of mishap during shipping and arrived with a rupture in her rear abdomen, which is usually fatal in tarantulas, since these are really very delicate animals. I was able to seal it with Superglue, which is chemically the same as the surgical glue used to close incisions and other cuts in humans and other animals, and so far she seems to be holding her own. Hopefully once she moults, she will be as good as new.

Really? What kinds did you get in? Maybe y'all have something I'd be interested in, since I'm always on the lookout for something new and different. Most of the pet stores around here don't even carry tarantulas, and if they do, it's always the same three-Chilean Rosehairs(the common brown-phased ones, not the rare reds), Common Pink Toes, and the beautiful-but-nasty Cobalt Blues. Let me know what you got in, OK?

Just make sure that they do NOT have sponges in their enclosures; tarantulas do NOT drink from sponges and will become dehydrated and die, plus wet sponges are ideal places for deadly(to tarantulas)bacteria and fungi to grow. They shouldn't be kept on any sort of shavings, either, but on potting soil without the plant food or insecticide. Sorry to sound intrusive but I've seen too many tarantulas in pet shops that were improperly kept, and died as a result.

Since the store I work at is so small, all we have in are a few of the three-Chilean Rosehairs that you mentioned, and they're the brown-phased ones. Not much variety:( But perhaps we may get different taranchulas in in the future. And don't you worry, those taranchulas are taken care of extremely well, thanks to Joe, the store's expert on practically everything:P
