Part IV: Hotels Near Trolley Stops, Downtown

(These are all covered on the downtown map.)

You may have noticed that the cheaper hotels are pretty far from the Convention Center. Rather than walk more than a mile each way, you should check to see if your hotel is next to a station for the San Diego Trolley.

Here is a map of the trolley routes. I will be rating each hotel based on how close it is to a trolley station, stopping at the half-mile point.

From now on, I will only include a hotel if it is under $200 a night. If the number is less than 34, it's in the Downtown area and you can look up the complete hotel description in my earlier posts.

Orange Line (Downtown)

Park & Market
The fare to go to the Convention Center is $1.25 each way (this is the discount rate for all downtown stations). It will usually take 14 minutes to go from this stop to the Convention Center using the Orange Line.

Part V: Hotels Near Trolley Stops, Old Town, San Diego to La Mesa

(These are all covered on the main map.)

Three trolley lines extend out of Downtown San Diego. The first, using the Blue and Green lines, goes north and then east. The second, using the Orange line, goes each then north. The third, using the Blue line, goes south. You can find some really good inexpensive hotels along these lines if you are willing to put up with the commute each way. I will follow each route until the travel time reaches one hour.

Blue Line Stations (Old Town)

Middletown Station (just off the northern end of the downtown map)

The only cheap hotel near this station is unavailable right now.

Washington Street Station

Fares outside Downtown are $2.50 each way. It's at this point that day passes become economical: unlimited travel for four days for $15. Travel time is 18 minutes

The only close hotel is over $200 a night.

Old Town Transit Center ($2.50, 21 minutes)

This is the transfer point for the Green Line.

Fashion Valley Transit Center ($2.50, 33 minutes)

This is in the middle of a big shopping center. All hotels in this area are packed together in "Hotel Circle", #36. It takes 7 minutes to reach the Old Town station by trolley, with a 5 minute wait until the next Blue Line trolley arrives. Add that to the 21 minutes to get from Old Town to the Convention Center, and the total transit time is 33 minutes.
