He was in detention for shooting spit wads. For anyone not familiar with that term, since I don't know how popular it is in other countries, a "spit wad" is a little piece of paper (or napkin/paper towl/tissue) that's been chewed on to get it wet and mushy, and then traditionally stuffed into a straw and can be shot across the room when you blow it out of the straw. Although not harmful, they can be outright annoying and unsanitary, not to mention distracting during something like a class.
