Ellison will say he fathered modern science fiction? I'm surprised; Ellison, despite being a genius, is a fairly reprehensible man, but I've never heard him make a claim to that extent, especially since in his
Best of collection he claims to be a fantasy author, and not a sci-fi author. Really, I just wanted to put this in there because I adore Ellison and will take any chance I can to talk about him.
As for The Matrix, while Dark City did inspire it a good deal, Dark City was also predominantly inspired by Philip K. Dick's work, which would also actively inspire The Matrix as well. Aside from my joke about them "stealing" from them, I'd be hard pressed if neither of those sources at least didn't fess up to Dick having been one of their primary influences.
