b. I live closer to the East Coast than the West Coast.
I've seen folks from other continents attend the convention. Still, cost is an issue.
c. Honestly, I don't think you necessarily need to drive in SD, because 1. it's more pedestrian-friendly than it is car friendly, and 2. I believe they have trolley services from the airport to the downtown area. Now, if you don't get a room in the Downtown area or in the Gaslamp Quarter, then you're more than likely going to need a car, which would be a bigger problem for you.
