Ponyo!

The new Hayao Miyazaki film, Ponyo (Japanese Title: Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea) opened yesterday for a wide release in America. Has anyone seen it already, or planning to see it?

It has some amazing reviews, a 95% on the Tomatometer, plus a great voice cast that includes Liam Neeson, Betty White, Lily Tomlin, Cloris Leachmen, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, and Tina Fey. Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas are in the lead roles, and even though they're kinda new, from what I've seen, they do the voices for the dub really well.

So, anyone gonna see it?

I will definitely watch it at some point. Miyazaki was at the San Diego Comic-Con last month, but I did not get to see him. I have not seen a Miyazaki film that has disappointed me, yet, and this one definitely look like one worth watching.

GM, Iceburg210 and I saw Miyazaki at the Con, and a preview for this film. It looks bright and colorful and all, but just not as interesting as other Miyazaki films in my opinion. I may or may not go to see it, I haven't decided.

Oh man, I want to see this SO bad. I'm a big fan of his work, (Kiki's Delivery Service got me hooked instantly) and would be the happiest day of my life to see this. It looked cute and charming, and if I can/can't go see it, I'll buy it when it comes out. :D

I'm trying to remember if Disney has ever done an anime before. I'm sure they have, but I can't think of any. I think that's pretty cool that they're doing something different.

I might see this at some point, it does look cute. :) I'm just never really had a thing for anime. Not that I don't like it, I just can't get myself to connect to the style I guess.

Disney doesn't "do" anime, they just like, produce Miyazaki's films in America with English speaking actors doing a voiceover. Miyazaki's films are Japanese. But Disney does the English-speaking world a great service bringing us these movies.

I went to a midnight showing of Ponyo at Downtown Disney... Yes, I be nerdy. It was really cute. It wasn't like Princess Mononoke or Howl's Moving Castle or even Spirited Away.. It was a bit more like My Neighbor Totoro in it's simple sweetness. I had watched a poor quality version of Ponyo on my computer before. I don't recommend that to anyone. I think it's meant to be seen on a bigger screen. You can see all the colors and little details better that way.

I couldn't stand the english song at the credits though. That made my ears bleed. I want to go see it again soon.

Of course! I adore Hayao Miyazaki, and Studio Ghibli in general. Great to see Miyazaki back with more goodies, since for a long time Howl's Moving Castle (which is, incidentally, my current favourite Ghibli film) was rumoured to be his last.

I suspect that, as with most Ghibli films, I'll wind up seeing the English dub first, but I do look forward to being able to watch it with its original Japanese audio when it comes to dvd. On the whole, I think that the English dubs given to Ghibli's catalogue have been pretty decent, but there's still no beating the originals.
