RIP George Carlin

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25322638/

Wow. He was 71, and he had heart problems, but it still seems shocking when such a prominent person dies.

One Radical Dude 06-22-2008 09:25 PM

Whoa...I know Carlin wasn't a young guy by any means, but it surprised me.

Mr. Marshmallow 06-22-2008 09:30 PM

Oh......my.......god......:wiltshock:

He was my freaking hero, my idol, my favorite comedian of all time.

:'( This truly sucks big time, we just lost a brilliant, genius man. I can't freaking believe this. I mean I LOVED that guy! I really loved all of his work.

R.I.P George Carlin.............you will be eternally missed.

Cassini90125 06-22-2008 09:35 PM

Wow, this was unexpected. He was one of the greats; he'll be sorely missed by a lot of people. :sadbendy:

Kootiebirdo 06-22-2008 09:41 PM

Well... the most that can be said now is that vulgar comedy will never be the same again.:(

R.I.P. you funny son-of-a-bi*beep*ch.:'(

Ridureyu 06-22-2008 09:47 PM

He was incredibly funny, much like an irate Santa Claus.

Mr. Marshmallow 06-22-2008 10:00 PM

In honor of him, I changed my signature picture. He was truly the funniest man I have ever seen and I learned a great deal from him in ways of humor and just general real life things.

Love you forever Carlin, love you forever *raises glass*

Nathander 06-22-2008 10:06 PM

Despite my love of shock humor, I was never a big fan of Carlin's, not so much because of his style of humor as much as some other factors. That's not to say that I don't respect Carlin: it's uncertain whether shock humor would've ever gotten widespread notice and become anything more than a niche group had Carlin never come onto the scene.

So, while I didn't necessarily care for him, per se, he was a genuine icon and innovator of a genre I love, and he'll be dearly missed.

Edit: Maybe I should elaborate. While I won't get into detail upon the factors as to why I had a hard time stomaching some of Carlin's work, I wouldn't call him a bad man, so please don't take that out of my post. What I'm attempting to say is, that while I may not have necessarily liked Carlin himself, I have the utmost respect for him as a comedian and entertainer. I don't think anyone could conceivably argue that Carlin hasn't, in some way, touched several lives if even slightly through his humor.

Medikor 06-23-2008 08:41 AM

I'm starting to think that I'm bad luck. Scatman John died shortly after I got into his music and now Carlin died just after I started watching some of his comedy acts. R.I.P Mr. Carlin.:(

antgirl1 06-23-2008 09:28 AM

Nuuuuuuuu! Not George Carlin!! D=

Why must all good people die? :(

RIP, George Carlin...we love you forever.

Mr_Bloo_Veins 06-23-2008 09:38 AM

Seriously....why him?

He was one of my favorite comedians.

R.I.P. to one of the funniest people to ever live

xxxClaire 06-23-2008 10:04 AM

Wow... this is a huge shocker... :(

R.I.P. Carlin... we love you... :'(

fosters home fan 06-23-2008 11:04 AM

Yuh, this suprised me a lot. I knew he had heart problems a while ago, but, this was totally unexpected. He was an awesome guy. Lots of funny Comedy HBO shows. RIP, George Carlin. :'(

I get what you're saying. I couldn't stomach everything he said, either, but he's made some interesting points at the same time and has influence a lot of folks. Aside from Carlin's comedy routines, I will not forget his role on the two Bill & Ted films as 'Rufus'.

koosie 06-23-2008 01:19 PM

Why did I only hear this through NF? This is big, bad news. He was a great man who influenced a great many and will be much missed.

Ridureyu 06-23-2008 01:20 PM

Yeah, exactly. I didn't like all of his humor, but what I did like I LOVED. Something amusing is that CNN had a poll today.

Shouldn't there be an option for both?

Sparky 06-23-2008 02:00 PM

I just heard about this in the car about an hour ago. :( Vulgarity and shocking humor are far from all Carlin did. He did a lot of animated voices (I love Zugor from Tarzan II) as well as children's TV (Shining Time Station). Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is still one of my favorite movies. And some of his comedy skits were clean (such as "Refrigerator Man", I believe was the title).

RIP. :sadbendy:

Ridureyu 06-23-2008 02:03 PM

His Baseball vs. Football routine was absolutely hilarious, and clean enough to be posted on this forum.

Kootiebirdo 06-23-2008 02:10 PM

Despite his bashing the 10 commandments during one of his shows, I still hope that the almighty goes easy on George.

some guy you dont know 06-23-2008 04:54 PM

wow. i dont think i can express my sadness, this guy has always been one of my favorites. its depressing to see him die. :(

RIP, you will be missed.

Lynnie 06-23-2008 06:25 PM

Other than recognizing his name and face, I wasn't really familiar with him at all. But I don't think that's reason enough to not pay my respects to a man who made such a difference in the stand-up world, and made many, many, MANY people laugh.

RIP Carlin :bloosad:

taranchula 06-23-2008 07:49 PM

I heard about the news last night, but the reality of the situation didn't really sink in until now.

I keep thinking back to one of my happiest memories in which me and mother went to see his live show at the National Arts Center in Ottawa back in 2002, and let me tell you there was not a single member of the audience which wasn't laughing his or her head off during his entire hour and a half set.

Truly Carlin was the living embodiment of counter-culture and he was taken from us much too soon.

Imaginary Light 06-24-2008 06:48 AM

Like Lynnie, I could recognize the man and the name, but was never really familiar with his comedy routines. However, I still think it's incredibly unfortunate that he had to pass so soon. :( R.I.P. George Carlin.

cartman414 06-24-2008 07:17 AM

These have been among the worst two weeks in the history of media/entertainment deaths. First Tim Russert, then Stan Winston, and now George Carlin.

The latter two I just missed out on the opportunity to see/meet in person. Stan was at Comic-con last year signing autographs, and George was at a Paley Institute panel last month that was sold out.

BluebottleFlyer 06-24-2008 09:32 AM

I've heard his name mentioned many times, but never heard any of his material. I'm sure he was good at what he did though. He'll be missed.

Mr. Marshmallow 06-24-2008 01:53 PM

Definitely recommend checking up his material Blue bottle. What made him so amazing was his way of mixing humor with every day things, his observations and understanding of human language and every day things made him not only hilarious to watch but also educational. I learned a great deal of things from him.

Its true he was VERY crude, he has quite a dirty mouth and in truth that's one of the biggest points about him: his tendency to go against the rules and talk about anything no matter how taboo or racy. I have two of his books "Napalm and silly putty" and "When will Jesus bring the pork chops?"

Both are funny as Hell and I definitely recommend checking out at least one of his DVDs. You'll learn and laugh a lot. Even my love for the guy set aside, he really is regarded as one of the legends of comedians. Least I think so anyway and its always a tragedy when a legend leaves us.

Xroc88 06-25-2008 06:11 AM

I bet he is staying with joe pesci now.

R.IP

Ridureyu 06-26-2008 04:25 PM

But Joe Pesci's alive...

Jackie Khones 06-30-2008 07:38 AM

He's.....He's really gone.

The greatest Comedian to ever live.

I always thought the reason he is funny, he told it like it is.

R.I.P Carlin :(

L.G. 07-04-2008 03:13 PM

And to think, he was also the narrator for a lot of the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. Rest in Peace, sir.

Jackie Khones 07-13-2008 05:00 PM

How I Found Out:

Watching TV, the news. And all of a sudden the reporter says she is sad to report comedian George Carlin passed on.

Killed Me. Killed me, really. I couldn't stand it. My favorite comedian and to be honest, a great mentor to me, was really really gone.

I was depressed the rest of the day. A month or so back, I saw his last comedy special on HBO. Laughed my ass off 'til tears were running down my face. Told my family I wanted to go see him sometime. Guess I was too late.

When I heard the news, thought it couldn't have been true. Thought I was dreaming or even it was a fake news report. But it was as real as real could be. :(:(

Mr. Marshmallow 07-13-2008 10:31 PM

I think one of the reasons I'm so sad over his death and why I'm still having a hard time coming to grips with it is because, I knew him. I mean I didn't know him personally but I knew him, I saw enough of him to know the man inside and out or at least enough to establish a real sense of honest to goodness connection.

It's not like Heath Ledger's death, that was more of a huge shock because he was so young and already amping up to have a fantastic career. I've watched enough of George Carlin to love the guy more beyond then the mere title of "my favorite comedian". To this day I am still having a hard time believing he is dead simply because of my love of the man.

I look at his old clips and specials now and its like, he's still supposed to be here, he's still off some where being his funny old self. But now he's not there anymore and I hate the fact I have to come to terms with that.

WiltsAKGirl17 07-13-2008 11:24 PM

As strange as this may sound, last night I finally realized who George Carlin was, and that I was wrong when I said that I'd never heard any of his work.

I was watching Cars, the Disney/Pixar film from 2006, and it was some scene with Fillmore, a 1960's VW bus. I was sitting at the kithcen table, watching some scene play out, and when Fillmore said whatever his next line was, I suddenly had the follwoing string of thoughts: Oh, that's George Carlin, dher. Oh yeah, he passed away recently. <replaced by some other random thought>

Now that I'm finally, if belatedly, informed... RIP Mr. Carlin. You will be missed, and thanks for the laughs. (Even if mine came from a VW Bus in CGI cartoon.) :(
