Found This Last Friday Night

I just now got around to getting some pictures and editing them down to size, due to some nasty weather we've had. I found this little guy in the middle of the road, in the middle of nowhere, last Friday night while out "road cruising" to look for snakes. I don't know if he's the offspring of a feral cat that his mama either dropped while avoiding an oncoming car, or who got lost following her, or if someone deliberately dumped him. I suspect the latter, because he's really sweet and friendly, totally unafraid of anything, and even at this young age, feral kittens are usually little spit-fires, hissing and biting if caught. This little boy is about five-six weeks old, I'm estimating, due to him still having blue eyes. I saw his eye-shine on the road, and thought he was a baby possum or a rat as I got closer, then he started to move towards the car, and I could actually here him meowing from inside the car with the radio on. He just ran right up to me when I got out. There were no houses for at least a mile in any direction. When I got him home, he was really dirty and covered in fleas, so he had to have a bath(make that TWO baths)immediately. He's way too young to put any sort of flea killing drops on, so I had to bathe him in Joy dishwashing liquid and then literally pick the stunned fleas off with tweezers and drop them in alchohol. I wasn't sure if he was even old enough to eat yet, but fortunately he can, if I soften the cat food up with hot water and mince it up with a fork. He still wants to nurse, though, and he'll suck on a towel or bedspread if I let him.

Now, I guess I'm gonna have to come up with a name for this little booger-any suggestions?

Aww. Okay my off-the-top-of-my-head suggestion is Koda, simply because there's something bat-like about his face and ears in that first picture, so I instantly thought of Batty Koda from Ferngully. But that's all I can think of. I'm lousy at naming pets; the tarantula I got in September still doesn't have a name, though we've been calling her "Resident" because of all the mail we get for "Resident" - we figured *someone* should be the recipient. 8D

Bloo2daMacs 07-01-2007 05:48 PM

Awww! What an adorable 'lil bugger. He sounds just peachy! Much nicer then either of my cats. Did he fuss at all when you gave him that bath? My cats make a huge fuss whenever I try to bathe them, which I merely do with a wet washcloth!

As far as names go. I ain't a wizz at naming animals. I named my first cat Topper in loving memory of my dog, and because the cat likes to lay on top of things (even if it is normal cat behavior), and I named my second cat Sibby because I was making weird nosies at her when I first got her, and the noise she responded most to was "Sibby". Perhaps you should wait a little longer to name it. It's always nice to have it's name reflect it's attitude, so maybe you should see what it likes to do.

pitbulllady 07-01-2007 05:54 PM

He actually didn't fuss as all when I gave him a bath, really seemed more like he enjoyed it! I guess maybe it was just such a relief to get all those fleas off him, that he didn't care about the water. He seems to pretty much take everything in stride. His ears won't always looks like that, though-he's just so young that they haven't stood up all the way yet(opposite of a Scottish Fold, which starts out with ears standing and then they fold over when they're about six weeks old). I've run out of animal names over the years, unfortunately, though I sorta do like "Koda". I'm having to keep him away from my other cats until I can get him to the vet for a checkup and blood tests, to make sure he doesn't have any of those nasty and usually-fatal cat diseases, like Feline Leukemia, which cats can carry for years without symptoms. All my cats live indoors, so they're not exposed to things, so this one will have to live inside, too. It's just too dangerous for cats outdoors around here.

Holy Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww! That cat is such the little cutie.

And he doesn't mind water, he must be like one of my mom's cats who will literally cry and cry and cry to be let into the hot and steamy dishwasher after it has finished running. Or crawl around in the tub after someone has had a shower.

Bloo2daMacs 07-01-2007 06:04 PM

Wow! He didn't fuss at all? That's... amazing! That is one cool cat.

Hmmm, I just can't get over that's cats face! It's incredible! Heres another thought on names, it's always fun to name animals the exact opposite of what they are. For example, one of my friends named his cat... Mouse. 8D

montitech 07-01-2007 06:05 PM

cute cat.

I suggest "Old Bloo eyes" for a name since it has those nice blue eyes.

Really?!, Mouse is the name of my older brother's cat as well. A cute little black thing who is very shy and quiet, which is most likely why she was named the way she was. 8D

Mr. Marshmallow 07-01-2007 06:33 PM

For some reason when I look at him, I just get food nicknames like Butterscotch or something. He is so DAMN cute it's not even funny :D, seriously, that's one of the cutest little cats I have ever seen. And man those blue eyes of his.

Speaking of blue eyes, you can maybe call him Mickey like Mickey Blue eyes. Or maybe Stripes or Kit like short for kitten or something. Or maybe call him Hawk, since his body colors are similar to that of a hawks.

Those are the best i can come up with, don't ask me where they came from cause they just popped in.

Imaginary Light 07-01-2007 06:53 PM

That cat's cuteness is blinding me. Awwwwwwwww:P

As for names? I'll suggest something like Monster (just not actually "Monster", because I can't actually think of an original name right now lol), just because I think naming cute, little things something totally opposite is cute.

I also thought of calling him "Pucca", after a Celtic goblin-like being that was mischievous in nature. Unfortunately, I don't think his eyes will stay that blue, if they remain blue at all. It would be very odd for a tabby cat that's not a pointed(Siamese-marked)cat to have blue eyes. All baby kittens have blue eyes when they first open, but they change to green or gold or amber. His will most likely be bright green when he's older. His lack of fear of everything is almost disturbing, though; earlier today he was trying to play with an eight-foot Black Ratsnake that was in its cage, and the snake seriously wanted to eat him, and would have done so if it could have gotten to him(and to think I normally have to teach my cats not to try to eat the snakes). He seemed amused by the snake trying to grab him through the glass. The usual bottle of "cat solvent"(water)does not work with this little guy; he is perfectly happy to let you squirt water in his face all day! I'm wondering if maybe he's not part bobcat, considering those large ears and his love of water, since the bobcats I've had all loved water like they were fish. He's also got a different coat texture from most short-haired cats, almost like an Akita puppy's coat. My adult Pixie-bob cat, "Nub", who is part bobcat, has a similar coat, but hers is more spotted than striped.

wow...part Bobcat you think? Call him Buck, from Call of the Wild. Domesticated dog who embraced nature and sired a race of wolves which were feared and respected by the Indians of the Yukon. Ahh...Jack London at his best :)

...i think it was Buck...right?

Lynnie 07-01-2007 08:33 PM

Oh, how precious!

OOohhhhhh!!!! It's a baby! A tiny itty one! OOOHHHhhh, it's just the most precious little thing on this side of the solar system! A Snookie Poo, Bookie Boo, Precious, Snicker Doodle, Snuggle Bun, Hugsie, LePurr, Kipper Coo, Bebe, Loopy Lim, Itty Bitty Teeny Weeny Itsy Bitsy....

Ok, I'm done.

(I like cats, can't you tell? LOL!) :goo:

Decided on a name yet? Hmm... How about Fivel, or Timmy, or Pooh Bear.

So it would seem. 8D So do I, I never met a cat I didn't like. I've met a few that didn't like me, but in my defense they didn't like anyone else, either.

jekylljuice 07-02-2007 11:47 AM

Aww, pretty kitty! :berry:

Isn't that little fellow just a sight for sore eyes? It's been a grey old day round here...a good helping of unadulterated cuteness is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you, PBL.

antgirl1 07-02-2007 05:25 PM

THAT is the cutest kitten ever! I'll bet the dude was just looking for a mama (or a papa) to care for him. Someone who would take him home. =D

Heck, why not just name him "Wilt" after the loveable tall red one, seeing that this cat apparently has as mysterious of a past as he does, and the personality he has? :D

Bloo2daMacs 07-02-2007 05:31 PM

Hmm, that would be a good name Ant, seeing as it has a kind and gentle personality, and lost it's original owner (If of course, it had one). Wow, I almost wish I had a cat named Wilt now... :P

some guy you dont know 07-02-2007 05:32 PM

cute kitten. kinda reminds me of morris (my kitten) as far as a name, i cant think of anything. but then im not good at naming pets (my turtles name is squirtle :P.)

One Radical Dude 07-02-2007 10:38 PM

I've REALLY, seriously thought about that, and if he'd been white and fluffy, it would have been a done deal. Most people here, though, associate the name "Chuck" with "Chuckie", the evil possessed killer doll of the insipid Child's Play movies and their various sequels. While this little guy CAN try my patience, and is quite mischievous and a bit on the hyper side, he's not mean or vicious by any stretch. He even knows how to "pull his punches" when he's wrestling with my hand, and most kittens and puppies tend to bite REALLY hard when they're very young, because they haven't learned that they have to control that bite reflex when playing with a thin-skinned human.

Given his beautiful eyes, I'd say that a perfect name for him would be "Sapphire", or, "Sapy" for short. And congratulations on the newest member to the family, Pitty.:D I honestly feel that you saved that little guys life.

His eyes aren't going to stay blue, guys. ALL little baby kittens have blue eyes when they open, but they gradually change to some other color, unless the cat is a "pointed" cat, meaning it has Siamese-type markings, or is solid white(and blue-eyed white cats are almost always stone-deaf), or is a bi-color, meaning it's at least 50% white and some other color, since the blue eyes are caused by the genes that create those coat colors or patterns. This kitten will probably have green eyes when he's grown up. It would be nice if they stayed blue, but I really don't think that will happen. He should turn out to be a handsome cat, in any case. He's got a nice, round face, almost like a British Shorthair. Most of the "alley cats" around here have a lot of Siamese/Oriental influence in how they're built, with that long, narrow pointed face and really short coat. This little fella has a thick, plush coat-not a long coat like a Persian or anything, but more like the coat on a Husky or Akita puppy. That's one of the things that makes me wonder if there isn't some bobcat back in his family tree, since they have those plush, more dog-like coats, too.

Really? I never knew that all cats were born with temporary blue eyes. That is very interesting, and as a cat owner/lover, I should have known that. Thanks for the tidbit, Pitty.:D

I was born with blue eyes and red hair; now I have brown eyes and brown hair. It's really not that uncommon.

Aww, I've always had hazel eyes and dirty blonde hair, but now and again my eyes would be either more green or more blue. :D

I had blue eyes, also, but now I have brown eyes.

lucyrocks73 07-05-2007 04:00 AM

I was born with green eyes and strawberry blond hair, but my eyes are more hazel now and my hair seems to get redder by the summer (it's this weird auburn color... half my family has black hair, and the other has red, so I get light brownish-auburn...)

Yeh this is a great little kitty. I like it when they're all fighty and turn into angry little bundles of fluff. Fortunately our cat has continued this into adulthood and like you say, holds back with tooth and claw even when her blood's up. A properly angry pussycat is a very dangerous animal but probably then you seem pretty clued up on animals and their respective talents, PBL. How many animals do you shelter exactly?

Mr. Marshmallow 07-06-2007 03:00 PM

I was originally born with jet black hair, I mean were talking VERY dark hair but as I got older and became a toddler I had blonde hair and now it's evolved into it's current state which is a dark, dark brown color.

My blue eyes though have never changed color over the years, except possibly into a darker shade of blue that is.

Sparky 07-06-2007 03:21 PM

I totally didn't mean to change the topic of this thread... :P Just wanted to provide an example of an animal (me) changing eye/hair color from babyhood.

The vast majority of my animals are of the eight-legged or no-legged pursuasion, so all in all, probably around 80 or so. Six are cats, including this one, though Buddy, my white British Shorthair, could qualify as two cats in one, since he weighs around 30 pounds! Yeah, he likes to eat...and eat.
