The Sims...Soon to be a major motion picture?!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6171544...ewstop;title;1

Well it looks like a certain NF staff member has somehow got into the ears of powerful Hollywood executives. ;)

From what the article mentions this movie looks to be yet another movie about "playing God", "controlling other's destines" and all that stuff that's been around since the advent of movies more then a century ago, only with the addition of a popular license to get people talking about it....much like I am doing now.

Cassini90125 05-25-2007 03:06 PM

I disavow any responsibility for this. 8D

What follows is reprinted from a PM I sent out minutes ago on this very subject:

Quote:

A live-action Sims movie?? You've got to be kidding. I'm not seeing the point of this at all. What'll they do, devote an hour to Don Lothario's quest to [self-censored] every woman in Pleasantview, followed by a segment on Brandi Broke's brats? It may be the most popular videogame in history but the movie is going to tank.
Not that that'll stop me fom seeing it, mind you. ;)

I see what you mean. My first thought was something like The Truman Show with 10% Tron but really they could take this in lots of directions as the whole idea of The Sims does open up new avenues like 2nd life etc. Did anyone used to like Sim-City by the way? Is it related?

Cassini90125 05-25-2007 03:21 PM

If they include some of the Aspiration and Career reward objects it might get interesting. I'm thinking specifically about the Cow Plant here (players know what I mean). Other than that, I don't know. The whole "playing god" routine has been done to death and frankly never interested me very much.

Koosie: I have Sim City 4, but it's only real use for Sims 2 players is to create new neighborhoods from scratch.

Mr. Marshmallow 05-25-2007 03:47 PM

Yeah I heard about this too. I honestly can't fathom how a movie like this can possibly function. Sims is like the backyard area of possible movie ideas, I mean that's stretching a bit picking up a game like this for a movie?

I don't really see how you can do this, or even think you could do this in the first place. There's no plot or story to make the movie out of and unless there planning on doing something amazingly brilliant to make sense of all this, this is a disaster waiting to happen.

Can't wait to see how the producers will convince people to watch characters who speak jibberish for 90 minutes.

So many answers, so little time... 8D

Some of the things Sims do are amusing, but a general audience wouldn't get most of it. Watching whoever plays the lead doing the insane routine Sims do when paying a bill would make a lot of players smile and shake their heads knowingly, but non-players just won't get it; they'll sit there and wonder WTF that was all about.

emperor26 05-25-2007 04:14 PM

Of all the things Hollywood tries to pull off when it comes to making a movie based on a certain videogame, this has to be a desperate attempt to make more money. Oh brother. ::)

To be honest, I'm not actually looking forward to this at all.

Sparky 05-25-2007 04:24 PM

No mention of what the plot will be...My guess is it will be about some people in a town who realise that they're being controlled by outside forces and band together to try and free themselves.

(Seriously, that's all I got.)

Cassini90125 05-25-2007 04:35 PM

I'd like to know who's going to play Mrs. Crumplebottom. 8D

..and then theres the bit at the end where they make you wonder are YOU the one in the computer game really?...ahhhhhh.

I still don't think it's as bad an idea as say, making a movie of Tin Tin.

Sparky 05-25-2007 04:43 PM

Unfortunately, I've thought of another possible plot.

One/some people in the normal, real world are playing The Sims 2 and then...(that's right) they get sucked into the game!! Ooo. And then they have to help the residents with some issue or another. And possibly convince them that they have no real free will and that they should be free or something.

Just because it worked in Pleasantville doesn't mean it will work here. It sounds dumb already. ::)

taranchula 05-25-2007 05:06 PM

I know the director of this film hasn't been named yet. But does anyone else have the sinking feeling that it's going to turn out to be Uwe Boll? :P

Invader Bloo 05-25-2007 05:40 PM

Wow, this would happen. ::)

Horror, thy name is Boll. Uwe Boll. *shudders*

Ditchy McAbandonpants 05-26-2007 12:43 AM

koosie: I assume you're referring to the recently announced Tintin movie trilogy from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson? What makes you say that's a bad idea? ??? They're fast-paced, exciting adventure/mystery stories filled with exotic locales, memorable characters and great action setpieces; I'd say they're potentially fabulous movie material, provided Jackson and Spielberg are able to capture the charm of Herge's brilliant artwork in their visual design. Unless you're saying you just don't like Tintin...in which case you'll have me (and Craig McCracken!) to answer to...:P

The Sims, on the other hand...how on earth could that possibly work? ??? The point of The Sims is that you've got characters living a normal life, but that you can control them. Doesn't removing the "control" part render the whole excercise pointless? Unless, as has been speculated, the movie will be actually about someone controlling someone else's life, but that's an idea that's been done before as well (The Truman Show and Stranger Than Fiction spring to mind), and by far better and more intelligent filmmakers, so that strikes me as pointless too...I dunno, this just sounds like an incredibly poorly-conceived cash-in to me. ::)

AerostarMonk 05-26-2007 10:29 AM

I just got off the phone with Uwe Boll. He said even this is beneath him.

Nyo 05-27-2007 01:45 PM

You talked to him? Did you tell him to make good movies?

Mr. Marshmallow 05-27-2007 02:49 PM

If you get a chance to talk to him, give him the same message Yucko the clown gave Sundance film makers at their festival:

*points to a garbage can*

"Stick your careers right in there, then go home and kill yourself!"

kageri 05-27-2007 04:35 PM

If they're stuck for titles, they can peruse this list I compiled. As always, this is a free service.

"The Application Will Now Terminate: The Movie"

"Starting Fires While Cooking TV Dinners: The Secret Lives of Nannies"

"Turning Off the Censor Blur Because It Goes Through the Walls But Then You Feel Like a Voyeur So You Turn It On Again: The Reckoning"

"Click 2"

"Goopy GilsCarbo: The Man Behind the Legend"

"The Male Pregnancy Saga"

"Running To The Window And Being Surprised That It's Raining Every Time It Rains"

"A Series of Unfortunate Reinstalls"

Anyway, I'll go see it, but if they don't say "Shoo flee?" at least once I'll be extremely disappointed.

Cassini90125 05-27-2007 04:51 PM

ROFLMFAO!!! That was beautiful!!! You have got to post that on the Sims sites! 8D8D8D

Chaos Wielder 05-27-2007 05:38 PM

A movie based on a popular PC game? Hmm...I don't know about that considering the Sims has never really been known for...umm..."plot"? :-/ I don't really know what else to say because I really don't know what to expect of this, really. :-/ I don't really think I'm looking forward to it, either, honestly. Sorry, but I think I'm going to have to pass on this one.

Sparky 05-27-2007 05:38 PM

I agree, that was awesome. You can add "What's That Puddle?" to that list. I'd come up with more but I'm not feeling real creative right now.

Nyo 05-28-2007 07:03 AM

Add "WooHoo!" to that list.

I'm...just...gonna go now...

Cassini90125 05-28-2007 07:35 AM

For comic relief they ought to give one of the characters the "Grilled Cheese" Aspiration.

Nyo 05-28-2007 10:47 AM

Or have a Sim running off from their own wedding.

One Radical Dude 05-28-2007 11:18 AM

Eh...even if I were into The Sims series, I honestly don't see how this film can be any good. :P

kageri 05-28-2007 11:19 AM

*bows* :B

To be honest I'm a little worried about how this'll do if it actually comes to fruition. Remember, this is the guy who screwed up Eragon. This could be good in the hands of a competent director, even though it says nothing about how they're going to make a movie based on expansion packs based on a game based on an idea based on real life that's renowned for not having a plot, but how's it going to be different from the Bruce Almighties before it? And who's going to go see a movie about someone moving to a new town, taking out the trash sometimes, meeting new people and learning to make pork chops? It's so confusing!

AerostarMonk 05-28-2007 02:16 PM

People who like movies by Gus Van Sant, that's who!

Medikor 05-29-2007 05:36 AM

This could be a fun premise. I'm thinking something like that Jim Kerry movie "Bruce Almighty". It could certainly be worth a few good laughs if it doesn't try to take itself too seriously.:D

I think it's Jim Carrey.^^;

And seriously, A Sims MOVIE? That's a laugh. :D

Cassini90125 06-03-2007 05:50 PM

Far better than some movie ideas that I've heard about, but yeah, I think this is likely to be a major flop. I've seen nothing about it on any of the sims sites I frequent, so I wonder just what the status of the film is right now.

kageri 06-03-2007 08:33 PM

If it stays true to its source it could wind up being quite... adult in nature. BOW CHICKA BOW WOW

And then they could have a variation of the "protagonist wakes up and realizes it was all a dream" ending, where the player's game crashes and he's been playing for like 5 hours and never saved and loses everything.

lucyrocks73 06-17-2007 04:27 AM

Wow. I'm not quite sure how they'll pull this off...

Cassini90125 06-17-2007 06:37 AM

Very badly, I suspect. To be true to the game the film will need to break at least once while running and require three hours to fix. Stars, I hate game crashes. >:(

Ha. Or be only ten minutes long- I attempted to install University and then my computer froze, which kind of made me stop playing for a while.

Bloo2daMacs 06-18-2007 05:55 AM

...Well, all I can say is I have NO idea how this is gonna work at all, but I'll go see it anyway. It sure seems rather.... intersting.... I'd just like to see how this all goes down.

Ricky Fieldmouse 06-20-2007 05:36 PM

Yeah, movie to game liscences don't always have the best reputation, but game to movie liscences... well, they probably have a worse reputation.

Super Mario Bros.
Resident Evil
Tomb Raider

These movies all fail IMO. And Sims probably will too.

Mr. Marshmallow 06-20-2007 07:08 PM

Hey, you guys think Sims being made into a movie is weird?

HA!

Have i got something mind blowing for you, take at look at this and I gurantee you that your jaws will drop: http://www.freezedriedmovies.com/blo...-Monopoly.html

Sparky 06-20-2007 08:12 PM

Well I dunno, Clue was pretty good...

But lol at the sexy young people thing. :P

antgirl1 06-20-2007 08:30 PM

Ok, I think America is getting stupider by the minute...
