Transformers the movie (LIVE)
I know there is a Transformers thread, but I really wanted to talk about JUST the live action Transformers movie that is coming out this summer. Basically, I just would like to know your guys thoughts on it.
Are you excited about it? dreading it? hating it? Because I know alot of people loathed hearing this movie was going to be made by Michael Bay, and talked of how god awful it was going to be. Even I was a bit skeptical about this. But like I ALWAYS say, after the trailers and photos start to pour out, people's minds changed and I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie. Anyone else? |

Hopefully, it doesn't bombed when it premieres. |
Boy am I glad to see this topic, Mr.M!:D I am hyped to see this movie. I've been following its progress since the early days on the official board and a couple of (better) fan boards. If anyone go'es to those my name is Dinobot-Sledge.
I knew that there would be changes made (what possesed them to give Prime hotrod flames?) but now that the voice actors are being revealed, things are looking up. Peter Cullen, the original Optimus Prime, is recurring his role, Hugo Weaving (LOTR Elrond) has been cast as Megatron, Kieth David (Spawn, Goliath) has been cast as Barracade and Frank Welker, the original Megatron, is apparently going to voice one of the decepticons. (my money's on Frenzy):D I think this film will turn out okay. I dislike Bay but hopefully, Speilburg will keep him in line. |
I actually enjoy Bay's work, well most of it. I loved Armageddon and I think The Island was a fantastic movie that very few people appreciated. I personally think the latest pictures and clips look absolutely bad ass.
I'm no die hard Transformers fan but even if I was, I find it hard to believe anyone would doubt the downright sweet looking action scenes of the robots duking it out. I'm also VERY happy that Peter Cullen is voicing Optimus Prime. I'm kinda pissed/confused why frank Welker is on the cast list and not playing Megatron, but Hugo Weaving is a phenominal actor and I know that an actor of his fine quality can certainly pull off a good Megatron voice. Here's hoping the sequels include more bots, and more blockbuster goodes for us summer movie freaks! :D |
Step on over to Ain't It Cool sometime. They tear into Bay and Murphy like sharks cruising through a school of sardines.

The vulgarity is the reason I never post. But the talkbacks are often good for a laugh. Sometimes the posters act like they were raised by Optimus Prime.
I think the movie looks like it's going to be great fun. However I hear the script isn't all it should be. I've also heard that the humans are the focus and the Transformers are nothing much more than plot devices. Oh, well, we shall see July 4th. I think I'll make a double feature of this and Live Free or Die Hard. |
I'm definitely going to see this, then "Live free die hard". Only thing that bothers me is I know that there are going to be alot of overly anal Transformers fan who will piss and moan about this movie regardless if they even see it.
Purist fans always tend to hate anything that isn't exactly 100% done accurately to a TV show, comic book or whatever. Either way, I'm giving Transformers the benefit of the doubt and criticize AFTER I see the movie. Never the less, I don't think I'm going to walk away from this movie disappointed. |

Hardcore fans can sure be a pain in the neck when it comes to something they have worship for a long time, and as you state, they would always hate anything that isn't like what they originally perceived. I find this very amusing, since their "criticism" (otherwise known as whinings) actually help something they hate to do well (ie "The Batman" has lasted for four season (with a season five to air this year) in spite of the hardcore fans "criticism") Also, I'm glad you're doing the right thing, 'cause it is best to actually watch (or play) something before making criticism. |
I'm surprised it got that fifth season. WB cooks any show that goes past 65 eps.
Yeah, but the purist fans are steaming mad over the designs of the robots. They moan that the original designs are iconic and these new ones look like walking junkpiles. What's worse is that many bring up spoliers in the script to prove to people interested in the movie that it's horrible. |
I'm not going to deny the fact Michael Bay has made turds in the past (Pearl Harbor) and I know that taking any cartoon series that originates from many childhoods is risky, but as I said I find it completely stupid and above all, PETTY, to hate a movie without giving it much reason.
Watch the movie and THEN hate it, but don't whine about saying how god awful its going to be when you won't take the decency to give it an honest look through first. I've seen plenty of movies I had low expectations over and I left the theater feeling very satisfied, and that to me is the overall point. Whether your a fan or an average movie goer, as long as you feel satisfied with what you saw everything else shouldn't matter. I am still upset over Weaving doing Megatron instead of Welker but I'm not gonna let that taint the movie, everything I've seen in the pictures and clips looks absolutely amazing. I think fans need to give this movie a chance before they automatically brand it a failure. Even if it's not as Transformers authentic as we'd all like it to be, I doubt anyone watching this movie will be bored. |
Just so you know Mr M, the reason Frank isn't doing Megatron (although he will be voicing him in the game tie-in) is that his voice wasn't suitable for Megatron's new look in the film. I personally think that Hugo is a great choice. I can imagine him as Megatron.
PS. Has anyone seen the new trailer for this yet? |
Yes I have, and let me just say the last and most recently released trailer has enticed me even more then the last one. This movie looks absolutely incredible and I know that this movie is certainly not going to end up the tanking turd as many people originally foresaw it as.
I am a bit upset over Megatron although I do admit his new look is interesting, and I got nothing but respect and admiration for Hugo Weaving since i loved him as V and Agent Smith. The trailers just keep on getting me pumped up, even more so then half the other big blockbusters coming out. Spider Man 3 was kick ass but not as epic, Pirates 3 so far has been the most spectacular number 1 summer movie for me so far, but I'm psyched and hoping Transformers will take that place once it comes out. I also bet you anything alot of people are no longer crying or moaning and groaning as much after the newest trailer. People always get angry certain things are made into movies or think the concept sounds stupid and automatically assume it's going to suck before it even comes out. But once a few pics leak out and a trailer comes around, watch how fast those people change their minds. No matter what anyone says, I think this movie is SO going to blow my mind. |
It certainly is refreshing to see someone with an honest and likable view on this movie Mr.M!:D Yes, many people are hating this movie before they see it but I think the worst offenders are the people who are mindlessly following everything Bay, Don Murphy and Orci have to say like they're flawless gods.
I really think that the people who get the most out of this film are the people like you, me and everyone else on this board who remember that it's just a movie. ;) |
Well the real problem is people have such a powerful fan base tied to this series, and as with any fanbase, people will be very skeptical and testy if their beloved childhood series is man handled. Usually they feel good knowing if it's in the hands of a big time director like say Spielberg, or Tim Burton or something like that.
So when news comes out of a director that majority of people seem to hate or despise (Michael Bay in this case), there gonna be all over it like flies to crap. Everyone hates Bay because they say he sacrifies story for kick ass action sequences and can't do anything BUT make really cool action sequences. I don't see it that way. Pearl Harbor was a turd, I can't ignore that. But I loved and enjoyed The Island and Armageddeon, the latter being one of my favorite movies ever. I didn't have a problem with either one of them, I thought both had very good stories and mixed well with the action, especially Island. I personally judge each movie different, just cause its same director doesn't mean same results. Tim Burton has changed styles in his films, so has Bryan Singer, Ivan Reitman, Luc Besson, sometimes you never know what your gonna get. I rarely let a past director's films taint my view of a new movie. |

I always have a hard time wondering why most hardcore fans (or whiners. as I prefer to call them) jumps to conclusion on something they love without actually seeing the final product. I know said this once, but it seems that sometimes, whenever they criticize something that hasn't come out yet, they actually contribute to the success to certain franchises. You can even say they unintentionally help some franchises to success, much to their dismay (and much satisfication for most people). As far as I know about Michael Bay, I have nothing bad to say about him. As you stated, each director has their own style of filming, and Bay is no exception to this (On a side note, i did enjoy Bad Boys and its sequel, and Armageddon as well, even though I'm not a big fan of disaster movies). I wouldn't be surprise if this movie does a successful job once it comes out in theaters next month. Well, that's all I have to say. |
I agree with much of what you said Mr.M. I'm just hoping that Spielberg keeps Bay in line.;) I really hope the powers that be give me the dinobots in the sequel...:D
|

But the sequel states it's definitely going to bring in the Dinobots, along with the Constructicons. |
So it's been confirmed? Last I heard was that DeSanto had an idea and a desire to bring the dinobots and constructicons into the next movie. I figured that it was too early to determine that it will happen. Here's hoping!:D
|
I can give you an early idea of what it's like (since it came out on June 28 in Australia ). My brother went to see it and this is what he SMS'd to me:
'Transformers... Awesome. You have to go see it. I want to see it again...' |

I just got back from a special late night/midnight showing of Transformers. And....well I think you should look at my post in the "last movie you watched" thread" if you want to know how i really feel.
Needless to say, I think Michael Bay has delivered to us the greatest TV show adapted movie ever! It's perfection in its purest form. |
I gave your post a look and you've got me more hyped then ever, Mr.M! I probably won't see the movie for another couple of weeks but I just can't wait. I'm on pins and needles.:D
|
I finally got the chance to see the movie today, and I have to say, it was worth the wait.
I was very surprise of the portrayl of the characters, in spite of their altered appearance, yet, they kept their personality intact (especially Optimus Prime and Megatron). Also, some of the actors done the voice very well, including Hugo Weaving, who sound almost like Frank Welker. Overall, I like the movie, and I have to say, Michael Bay did a good job with this film. |
I'm going to have to give this movie a thumbs down, something I hate to do. The story was too flat for my tastes, there was no real weight to any of the situations, a lot of the humor was uncalled for and not funny, the robots were marginalized to having little to no personality, and the action so messy that you could hardly tell what was going on. I enjoyed the thrill ride nature of the film, and I especially enjoyed the charm that Shia brought to the film, but the rest I can take it or leave it.
As I've said before, sometimes it takes multiple viewings for me to love a movie, and I plan on seeing this again at a later date. However, I'm sure my current thumbs down will still stand. Hopefully next time Spielberg will hire someone with a better appreciation and understanding of the cinematic language or at the very least have them hire better writers. |
