Leona Helmsley leaves $12 mil--to her dog

Hotel magnate Leona Helmsley, the self-styled "queen of mean" who died last Monday, left $12 million to her dog Trouble.

Her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, is getting millions as well for watching after Trouble in her absence. Two of her four grandchildren get $5 million provided they visit her gravesite once a year. The other two grandchildren aren't getting squat.

Story here.

I know that some other people have left their fortunes with a pet of theirs but my question is what happens to the money when the pet passes away?

"I don't pay taxes - the little people do!" - Leona Helmsley during her tax evasion charges. May she burn in ....(you know the rest)!:frankiemad::terrence:

Miserable old battleaxe. My sympathies to her unfortunate heirs; hopefully they didn't inherit her cold heart or her callousness, either. :frankiemad:

There are worthier possible heirs to the $12 million.

Like me, for example. Or, you know, cancer research? Orphanages? Starving children in Iraq? SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A MALTESE DOG? Ugh. I hate people.

Where will the dog leave it when it dies? I mean it can't possibly spend it. But then again it hasn't the ability to draw up a will.

I'm actually rather taken with the fantasy of becoming one of those eccentric billionaires who dies and leaves the entire estate to their pet guinea pig.

But then I do wonder what a vulnerable creature with no real concept of money in the first place is actually going to gain from having all that wealth handed directly to them...if anything, it puts a price on their head for whichever human hier is expected to gain the money after their own passing (I assume their owner had to specify in the case of such an event?). Anyone remember the Aristocats?

I certainly hope this brother of hers is trustworthy.

Sparky 08-30-2007 03:23 PM

Well the brother is getting $10 million as it is, he could probably stand to be trustworthy for that much...
