Ellison will say he fathered modern science fiction? I'm surprised; Ellison, despite being a genius, is a fairly reprehensible man, but I've never heard him make a claim to that extent, especially since in his Best of collection he claims to be a fantasy author, and not a sci-fi author. Really, I just wanted to put this in there because I adore Ellison and will take any chance I can to talk about him.

As for The Matrix, while Dark City did inspire it a good deal, Dark City was also predominantly inspired by Philip K. Dick's work, which would also actively inspire The Matrix as well. Aside from my joke about them "stealing" from them, I'd be hard pressed if neither of those sources at least didn't fess up to Dick having been one of their primary influences.

ETA and Global Warming. Look at a f$#@%&* mean temperature curve for the last 100,000 years, see how it dips up and down and up and down? That is a NATURAL PHENOMENA you FREAKING MORON!

I'm with ya there, pal! I'm one of the few who happen to believe that "global warming" is just a bunch of hog-wash. Wasn't it only ten or so years ago that we were facing the threat of global freezing and heading into a new ice age?:jk:

Seriously.

Look at a graph showing the average temperature over the last 100,000 years. Every high school Biology text has one. See the straight line going horizontal? That is the average temperature, iirc its about 67 degrees F. Now see the wavy line that dips up and down like a sound wave? That is the actual temperature for that period. We happen to be experiencing one of the up phases right now.

And i still have not seen any solid evidence that proves humankind is to blame.

And i still can't understand how marginally cutting back on the consumption of fossil fuels will change anything.

And, for the life of me, i STILL CANNOT UNDERSTAND why America gets blamed! Didn't the Industrial Revolution start in Britain? Russia and China's ecologically horrendous industrial practices don't matter?

Then I strongly suggest that you read some legitimate scientific papers on the subject and ignore the ones sponsored by the oil companies and their apologists in Washington.

Marginally cutting back won't help. Substantially cutting back will.

They do matter but that doesn't excuse us from doing something about our own such practices. Also, the point of origin for the Industrial Revolution is meaningless. Heavier-than-air flight was invented in America but I hardly think the Wright brothers should be blamed for what happened to London during the Blitz.

In any event this is a highly charged topic loaded with political implications so I suggest we move on.

I personally don't believe in Global Warming, either. I respect opposing views of my own, as long as one doesn't try to choke me for not believing it. I'm going to stop there.

People that just can't read something that's in front of their faces. Now that's something I can't stand. :edmad: Instead of doing what it says, they ignore it.
