The Adventures of Tintin
If you've not yet seen this film, do yourself a favor and go see it. Whether you're a fan of Tintin or not, you will admire this film. It's quite funny and has some very thrilling moments, one of which was done in ONE SHOT! The only thing I didn't like (and this is my logo self saying this) was that they wasted a great opportunity to create official logo music for Nickelodeon Movies, as all of the logos were silent. But again, that's just my logo self saying this. Fantastic cast, great music, and very funny moments make this a great film to see. |
The Muppets (2011)
Bar none, the best theatrically released Muppet movie since The Muppet Christmas Carol and sadly that was almost 20 years ago. Everything in this film just clicked, the songs, the gags, the story, even the "Celebrity cameos" were fun (My favorite cameo was the one made by Foo Fighter's front man David Ghrol, I won't give away what he was doing in the film, but it was a great moment.) I have to give Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller and James Bobin credit, they certainly have a lot of love and admiration for the source material and it shows in almost every frame of the film. Glad to see the spirit of Jim Henson's imagination live again. |
2012
I bought the DVD some time ago but didn't get around to watching it until early this morning. Much like The Core, the "science" behind the plot is utterly preposterous, to the point where I have to wonder if anyone in the writer's guild has even heard of science, let alone taken a course in it. The characters were passably likable, albeit not by much, and there wasn't all that much of a plot beyond everybody trying to get to a safe area while the Earth falls apart around them. Mostly the movie was an excuse to show off a lot of explosive special effects, which it did very well; I imagine that it must have been beyond spectacular on the big screen, and they were pretty dang impressive on my computer monitor as well. Again, not much on plot or characters but it's full of fire and action, and a pretty enjoyable way to spend 2-1/2 hours. |
Rio
The latest from the creators of Ice Age and Robots. I was kind of unsure about this film at first, since it looked like it had a very simple story concerning talking animals wanting to go home... and plot wise, I was right. Everything else though was great. Great voice actors (including Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Leslie Mann, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan and Jemaine Clement), awesome music (loved the use of Lionel Richie 8D) and wonderful visuals. So, if you can get past the story, it's a great film. |
I don't want to double-post, but this video I made pretty much explains not only the last movie I just saw, but my reaction to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVfCiv0yMh0

Sat down to Yellow Submarine last Saturday. It played nationally at selected theaters last Thursday in a special engagement and will be re-released on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 5.
|
The last movie I watched was Shawshank Redemption.
|
Battle: Los Angeles
Aliens invade Earth. The story focuses on a squadron of marines and their mission to rescue a group of civilians. Once it gets going, the action is gripping and virtually non-stop, and even during the lulls between firefights the tension never lets up. Loved it. |
Since I haven't posted here in I don't know HOW long, I thought I'd give my opinions on the last two movies I got to see:
Hotel Transylvania Many people here will probably want to see this because of Genndy Tartakovsky, while some may want to see it because of Adam Sandler, but I'm happy to say that despite the casting of Adam Sandler and most of his co-stars from the movie Grown Ups, it's still a great film to see. There's some hilarious cartoony moments in this film, great humour, and I have to say that Mavis (despite being voiced by the girlfriend of JB :frankiemad:) is on my list of gorgeous animated female characters. I always like to think that just because Adam Sandler is in it doesn't ALWAYS mean that it's going to be a bad movie, and this is one of those films. It's great fun. 4/5 Argo Anyone (except me) who's old enough to remember the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis should give this film a go. The film stars Ben Affleck (who also directed it) as Tony Mendez, a CIA specialist who finds out that 6 of the American members of the US Embassy have escaped and are hiding out the the Canadian Embassy. Tony soon comes up with quite possibly the most improbable plan in history: create a fake Canadian movie and pose the 6 Americans as members of the film crew on location scouting. There are some great one-liners and humour in this film (courtesy of John Goodman as a make-up artist and Alan Arkin as a washed-up producer), and the climax has great tension and suspense. It's definitely my pick for Best Picture at the Oscars, no doubt about that! 4½/5 |
Sharpshooter
Special Ops sniper is ready for retirement but gets talked into one last mission, succeeds, gets double-crossed, and gets the double-crossers. Not much on plot or character development but enjoyable nonetheless. What was especially interesting was that the action took place mostly in Julien, CA, about an hour outside San Diego; Howard and I visited there during this year's Comic-Con and back in 2011. Seeing familiar locations added a lot to the movie; makes me want to rewatch Jurassic Park 2, which took place in San Diego, just to see if I can spot anything that I've seen in person. |
Skyfall, the latest James Bond entry. Cracking good actioner hampered by some over-the-top crashes and pyrotechnics. Judi Dench continues to be awesome as M, Bond's superior (her curtain call in the role).
|
Wreck-It Ralph. Think "Super Mario World" meets "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" A very clever and witty CGI-animated Disney effort about redemption and being true to one's self. Vanellope Von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman) steals the movie.
|
Bought Wreck-It Ralph today (actually finally bought a blu ray player just for that), but what I actually just finished watching was Brave. I missed it in theatres, it didn't look that good from the previews. And I ended up not caring for it after all. Looks nice and all but just...eh. No offense to anyone who loves it, just differing opinion.

The Sting. I wish I could look as good in a tux as Paul Newman did in that movie.

"Oz the Great and Powerful." A wonderful movie for an L Frank Baum geek like me.

Speed
A bus has a bomb on board, which will explode if the bus's speed drops below 50 mph. It's up to Keanu Reeves to save the passengers and catch the mad bomber. Doesn't sound like much of a plot but it's a pretty good story with a lot of action, a few nice explosions, and what is probably the longest chase scene in movie history. 8D Good casting, too; Dennis Hopper makes a very convincing psychotic bomber. I'll definitely be watching this one again. Rated R; Runtime = 1 hour, 25 minutes. Sandra Bullock was a knockout, by the way. :bloocross: |
Carrie (2013). I liked it better than the original one.

Nightmare before Christmas 1993 am I huge Nightmare before Christmas fan so yeah

What will you dream, Little Nemo
Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989/1992)
I found out recently about this unknown animated film thanks to The Nostalgia Critic, and I have to admit, it's not bad. I mean, there's some major problems with the story, and the opening scene is the most random (kinda like saying 'Every time I say the word 'elephant', the Burger King will appear!'), but the animation is astounding, two of the songs are beautiful (no big surprise as the songs in this film were written by the Sherman Brothers), and Princess Camille is definitely a real cutie. The best moments from this movie for me are Camille punching Flip (trust me, he truly deserved that! 8D), and the end when Camille and Nemo share a kiss before he wakes up. Overall, it's not one of the best animated films, but it's nowhere near awful or terrible. It's just an okay film, with great animation. |
Mega Piranha (2010)
Genetically altered fish escape from lab in Venezuela and make their way North to Florida, surviving bullets, bombs, missiles, and a 20 kiloton nuke along the way. American Special Agent and a lady scientist do everything in their power to stop them. Fish grow bigger every hour and are whale-sized by the time they reach Florida. After escaping from Venezuelan captors, Special Agent comes up with a plan to kill the fish with Navy Seals armed with high-powered underwater rifles. At the end of the movie, Special Agent and lady scientist make out. A 2010 Syfy Channel (who else?) movie, produced by the Asylum, the same people responsible for bringing to us such cinematic classics as Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, and the unforgettable Sharknado. Stars Tiffany as Sarah Monroe the lady scientist, Paul Logan as Special Agent Jason Fitch, and Barry Williams as Secretary of State Bob Grady. Overall, I'd say it was entertaining, as long as you don't expect a coherent storyline or anything resembling scientific accuracy or plausibility. Enjoyable, yes, but by the stars this is one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. My thanks to Walgreens for only charging me $2.00 for the DVD. :bloocross: Still better than Twilight, by the way. 8D :P |
Muppets Most Wanted 2 times.

Everything is AWESOME!!!
The LEGO Movie (2014)
At long last, I have FINALLY seen this hysterical and amazing movie. I was lucky enough to attend an advance screening of this movie (I'm currently in hospital, so I should be so lucky) and if you haven't seen this movie yet, I suggest you stop reading this and go see it. The voice acting is hysterical (who would've thought Liam Neeson would be hysterical) and the animation (done by Animal Logic, the same studio that did Happy Feet) is astounding! The story is basically a prophecy story, but it has so much smart writing and great humour (considering that this is the same directors that did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, that's not surprising), you'll be willing to stay on this fantastic ride. Oh, and good luck trying to get that song out of your head. 8D VERY highly recommended!! |
Brave (2012)
Rousing Celtic adventure in medieval Scotland. Headstrong princess Merida doesn't want to marry any of her dork suitors, argues with her mother about it, runs away, and inadvertently plunges the realm into chaos. Plenty of action, humor, and heart, with a little magic, likable characters and a good storyline, which you pretty much expect from Pixar. ;) Rated PG; Runtime = 1 hour 33 minutes. In other movie news: https://movies.yahoo.com/news/sony-p...160136471.html Oh, joy. :bloocross: |
Immortals (2011)
Watched this one at Howard's place last night. Big-budget action and adventure in ancient Greece. Mad King Hyperion seeks the Epirus Bow, which has the power to release the Titans from their inprisonment in Mount Tartarus, and it's up to mortal hero Theseus to stop him. The movie has a larger-than-life, epic feel to it, with some fairly bloody battle scenes, more than a few acts of barbarity by Hyperion and his henchmen, and appearances by the Greek gods dressed in golden armor. This is the best mythology-based movie I've seen in a long time. Stars Mickey Rourke as Hyperion, Henry Cavill as Theseus, and Frieda Pinto as the oracle Phaedra. The movie doesn't follow the plot of any specific Greek myth that I recall but given it's entertainment value I'm willing to ignore that small detail. ;) Rated R; Runtime = 1 hour 50 minutes. |
Godzilla (2014)
I rarely see movies in an actual movie theater anymore but sometimes you gotta say the heck with waiting for the DVD, you want to see the movie on the big screen, and you want to see it NOW. :bloocross: That was the case last Friday when Howard and I saw the newest Godzilla movie. The plot? Mankind inadvertently awakens a gigantic insect-like thing from ancient times, which goes hunting for sources of radiation for food. It also calls out to and awakens it's mate. Both tear up a lot of real estate while seeking food and each other. Godzilla, sleeping on the seafloor, hears them calling to each other and awakens to hunt them down. There's a lot of destruction but we don't get to see the ancient monsters fighting as much as you might expect. Godzilla himself is bigger than ever, although his neck seems to be shorter than it used to be. :bloocross: He got two rounds of applause from the audience during the film, the first when he first uses his breath weapon, the second after his inevitable triumph over the other monsters (which also involved his breath weapon). The movie ends with the big guy swimming out to sea, presumably to wait for Rated PG-13; Runtime = 2 hours, 3 minutes. |

As for the last movie I saw, it was Virgin Queen, about Elizabeth I. I love the history! |
I just saw a preview screening iof "Chappie," the newest effort from the folks who brought us Distruct 9. Its a work in progress, but I hope they can polish it up. It was frankly ridiculous, and couldn't decide if it was serious or not serious at all.

I think I'll pass on this one. :weirded: |
In case no one has heard yet, news broke over the weekend that there will be a sequel to Frozen. Yay! I just hope it's not stupid and only geared toward toddlers like it seems most other Disney sequels are. With the exception of Pixar movies, since I think the Toy Story trilogy was awesome all the way through.
And the last movie I watched was Mansfield Park, based on the classic novel by Jane Austen. Still love the history. I always love the history! |
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
I'm no comic book geek, but I couldn't help but enjoy this great action film. This was the second film I saw since I got out of hospital (the first one being How to Train Your Dragon 2, which is a brilliant movie in its own right), and I really enjoyed it. Chris Pratt (from The LEGO Movie) is great as Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, Bradley Cooper was wonderful as Rocket Raccoon, and Karen Gillan (from Doctor Who) was surprisingly great as one of the main villains. I will say this, the post-credits scene at the end of this movie is probably the BEST I've seen so far, but you may have to either be a true Marvel fan or have a REALLY good knowledge of bad 80s movies (or both) to get it. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun ride that doesn't take itself seriously, and has a rockin' soundtrack to boot as well. I recommend it! |
The Matador (2004)
Pierce Brosnan stars as a quirky assassin who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a businessman in a hotel bar in Mexico. They cross paths again several months later when the assassin seeks him out, needing help on one last job. Much lighter than most assassin movies, actually kind of touching in an odd sort of way. Very enjoyable. :) Rated R; Runtime = 1 hour, 37 minutes. |
Just saw Inside Out & Minions recently, probably the best films I seen in a while.:P

Minions 8/10

The Lego Movie (2014)
This was... surreal. :bloocross: Quirky, but in a good way, amusing and likable characters, good special effects on top of an almost entirely CGI production, and a late plot twist that I did not see coming, all combined make for a pleasant viewing experience. Nothing particularly heavy or deep here, although the ending is sweet and warm... at least until the last scene, when the Duplo blocks show up, and you burst out laughing. 8D Not going into too much detail here so as not to spoil things for those who haven't seen it yet and if you're one of those people, rent it when you have a chance; it's worth it. Rated PG; Runtime = 1 hour, 41 minutes. |
Lol I'm actually watching that right now.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men This is a 90-minure fan production on YouTube, starring some of the actors from the various Star Trek series'. The production values are a little low, the dialogue could've been better, and the plot was a bit over-the-top. Yet it has heart, and it has something to say, and in it's own way this movie is as good as any episode from the original series or any of it's successors. Watch it if you can; it's worth the time. A+. |
