im being conned by the school. :P

i owe the school money now. only, i never had the money i needed to pay them back with in the first place. actually, i never spent the money the school says i need to pay them back for. its only like 2 dollars, but the fact that the school wants me to pay them for money i never took from them, that annoys me to no end. also, i dont have any money on me right now, so until tommorrow, the school is just going to keep badgering me as though i had the cash on me.

man i wish it was saturday. then i wouldnt have to bother with all of this.

I might just be tempted to go and place a bet on what's going to be the Christmas #1 single this year, as it's more likely then not going to be the winning single of this year's "The X Factor", as it has been for the last 4 years. Not content with subjecting us to a factory of manufactured bubblegum pop stars singing the same kind of done-to-death cheesy pop ballad with a tinkly piano intro and key change for "dramatic effect" and more than likely a cover song too, they've pretty much stolen the festive #1...although I'm wondering why I actually care what's #1 anymore, seeing as it clearly doesn't judge how good a song is.

I was pretty chuffed to see Biffy Clyro in the Top 10 last month though.:)

War and Peace length rant

In all honesty? My parents' veiw on my love of cartoons.

I mean, you guys know me somewhat well, right? Obviously enough, I love Foster's and my heart now has a huge place for Transformers: Animated-- just look at my DA gallery and you'll see what I mean, not to mention the fact that my friends know me so well. My friends know that when I love something, I love it all the way. I admit, this has turned into obsession before, but I've learned to control it and keep it down to a mere passion.

Unfortunately, my parents aren't the same way-- they don't get that I have a passion for these two shows (my other favorite TV shows are all live action, and things we've all watched as a family. Fosters and Transformers: Animated are the only things I can only watch when they're not around).

Foster's was the first to come under my parents' fire. In general, they just don't get the show, nor my love for it, despite the fact that we watched GWH as a family about a year ago. I recall only one specific moment, but that moment is laser engraved into my brain-- my parents were lecturing me on my behavior, and my mom told me to quit acting like I was 12. My dad corrected her, saying, "Remember what she watches." This was a clear reference to Foster's, as my mom adressed me with words to the effect of, Quit acting like you're 8. I was across the room, standing in the kitchen while they were in the living room, so I'm grateful they didn't see the rage in my features.

Now currently under fire is Transformers: Animated. Watching it is a little harder for me because the show comes on at 5 AM in Alaska, and the times it's on on weekends is hard to catch because I never have control of the TV remote and I don't have cable in my room. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying, nor from asking for a calendar and possibly season 1 on DVD for Christmas. (Just as a side note, shopping has to be done early for us, since a lot of it's done online-- malls are 400 miles away from our house.) My requests were summarilly keel-hauled: my mom dismissed them as the stepping stones to obsession.

My dad's response took the cake and still bothers me whenever I think about it:

Quote:

Conversation between WAKG17 and her father
Father: Transformers is a cartoon for 8 year old boys.
WAKG17: So?
Father: You're 18.
WAKG17: So? I can't be 18 and like cartoons?
Father: No.
It takes a lot to make me physically sick to my stomach, but this is one of those things-- I felt like I had been insulted, practically slapped in the face. In frustration, not to mention hurt, I told my parents to totally disregard those items on my list.

It was then that I realized I may not be able to get my parents to understand the way I feel about my cartoons. Ever. I don't understand-- I know they want me to be happy, but they won't indulge me with a season DVD set and/or calendar? I'm not asking for the world, am I?

This is what makes me happy-- as I type this, I'm sitting with the movie adaptation Transformers Battle card game spread around me, the 2007 movie playing on the TV in front of me, a figurine of movie Bumblebee and Decepticon Scorponok chill-axing next to me and pics in my camera I plan on sending to my friend Elizabeth, a few fanfic samples to type and post to DA, and the second part of the season one closer, "Megatron Rising," to look forward to in the early morning hours.

I could be doing so much worse at this late at night-- I could be drinking, doing heavy drugs or comprosing my ladies' honor, but instead I choose to spend my evening indulging in the movie (hoping that after seeing it a 5th time will help me figure out what the frag is going on); playing card game battles between Optimus Prime and Megatron (Prime won, for the record); wondering how exactly Corey Burton's Animated character would tell Jeff Bennet's recently-blinded character (Ratcher and Prowl, respecitvely) to pick himself up by his own fraggin' bootstraps and quit feeling so damned sorry for himself, tripping over your own feet and falling on your face-plates put aside, wile being in-character and still sensetive enough to get the latter back to his feet; posing Bumblebee and Scorponok and snapping pictures; wondering what exactly will happen in "Megatron Rising, pt. II;" and crying as Bumblebee is taken into FBI custody against his will.

I don't care what my parents think of this whole thing; this is my thing, and I will not yeild.

Okay, so it turned into a Transformers rant... Big deal, it still bothers me immensely.

Ah another classic example of people who clearly fear what they do not wish to understand.

I'm sorry but this whole "it's animated, so it's just for kids" mentality should be tossed out like the proverbial expired milk in the fridge.

Wow, six Canadian provinces separate myself and my fellow NF-er and yet you still manage to it the nail on the head. I feel like this sums it up pretty well.

A lack of undertsanding is why I just gave up telling my parents about my free time. When I'm asked what I'm doing in my room, I usually reply with, "Nothing," occassionally, "Not much." What I'm really doing: Most likely writing fanfiction the old-school way, by hand.

Unfortunately, these responses rarely work-- my dad's classic retort is, "Nothing at all?" In these situations, I generally fake my way to answer that satisfies the parentals' curiosity-- the most specific response I've dished out is, "Writing." No clue as to the content, because my parents frown quite deeply on my fanfiction tendancies-- quite a problem when that's the only thing you write well.

I really wish that my parents would take the time to watch Foster's and Transformers: Animated with me-- even if it's just once for each show. I think that they could enjoy it. I mean, without turning this post into a list of "101 Reasons Why WAKG17's Parents Should Watch Foster's with Special Add-On of 50 Reasons Why They Should Watch Transformers: Animated, Too," Foster's has enough humor and pop culture references to amuse any adult-- even dense, 18 year old me can catch some of them! The same is some what true of Animated-- my parents are both old enough to get the older Transformers series (generally referred to as Generation 1 or G1 by fans), and Animated has paid homage to the orignal series before. And even though the humor is more geared toward, I shudder to quote my dad on this as this would imply him being right on the issue, 8 year olds, it gets you to laugh-- laughter knows no age limits.

But sometimes we want what we can't get. But thanks for the added voice on the animation is not just for kids argument, T-- I appreciate knowing I'm not totally alone on this one.

jekylljuice 10-03-2008 06:41 AM

Yep, I agree completely. Fortunately I've always been very lucky in that my parents have never given me any hassle for my ongoing love of cartoons and animation. It probably helps that my mum is such an avid fan of the Tintin and Peanuts cartoons, so she understands.

This whole thing reminded me of an arguement I had with my Dad when i was 18 and was furious that he'd cancelled the programming to record an early morning episode of Mr Rossi searches for happiness. He wouldn't understand that it was loaded with meaning and more complex and wonderful than the real-life wooden rubbish cop shows he watched.

In the end though you have to forgive them for not fully understanding you. It's good to have things in your life that are beyond your parent's knowledge or comprehension -as well as all the fundemental things you share. It's part of what makes you an individual, a whole new person. I never understood why people enjoyed watching other people dancing. How is it entertainment? What do they get out of it? Anyway one time recently I just suddenly got it like I never had before. There was this guy dancing and he was really good at it and it was great to watch somebody doing something really well. Anyway then all these ladies joined in and that was good too. :) Before that moment I'd closed myself off to dancing as a form of entertainment just like a frowning anti-toon parent.

Another way of looking at it or explaining it to someone else is that a whole bunch of adults made Transformers: Animated and at least some of them would have put their heart and soul into making it and might have been really good at what they were doing (like the dancer). For you to respond to that, however old you are, is a really beautiful, human thing to do.

some guy you dont know 10-03-2008 02:03 PM

did your parents like any cartoons as a kid? you should show them those, see if they find them to be "a show for 8-year olds."

also, shows like family guy, south park, the simpsons, some anime like death note, etc.

are they all for 8-year olds?

people who think that you shouldnt enjoy something after a certain age really ticks me off.

Sparky 10-03-2008 02:44 PM

I do partly blame my parents' lack of support on my inability to land work writing for animation. They never liked that I wanted to make cartoons for a living. I didn't get any support for wanting to be a writer either; my dad had wanted to be a writer and failed so I think that made him hold me back. My mom didn't really have a problem with me being a writer, but she never wanted to read any of my stuff because I wrote fantasy and she didn't like fantasy, She finally did read something but was unable to offer me any criticism because she "didn't like fantasy."

She later became a major Harry Potter fan and devoured those books. You can imagine how that made me feel. :P

Cassini90125 10-03-2008 02:56 PM

I never even bothered showing my parents the stories I wrote. They were never very supportive of anything else I did, and they weren't sci-fi fans at all. There wouldn't have been any point in trying to interest them. I never got a lot of grief from them when I watched cartoons but I knew they didn't approve or understand my interest. Neither did my brother, actually, who to this day continues to display his disdain for animation. Stars, any wonder I always felt so cut off, so disconnected from that family; the only things we had in common were similar nutritional needs and a few strips of DNA. That's all, nothing more. :bloosad:

some guy you dont know 10-03-2008 06:03 PM

ugh, i never have any fun when my dads around. maybe because hes been yelling at me for stopping his show from recording. when i didnt. and he does it all the time to my shows. then denies it.

also i cant talk back, because he feels he deserves my respect. and thinks im like the anti-christ because i dont respect him. and he thinks hes the only person in the house. (IE: he deserves what he wants more than i do.)

and again just blames me for everything. then acts all sneaky and like an censored when he locks his shows so nobody can overrule them. because he deserves to watch his shows more than anyone else in the family does.

im goin to canada when i get out of school. at least i wont have to deal with him there.

LOL! Same thing with my mom. She loves the books, movie, etc.

Yuh, when she drug me to one of the Harry Potter movies one time (best description could be shown as a big Z), she saw a line for people going to the Simpson's Movie, so she's like "look at all those weird fans" and "that's a really weird show" and yet she's going into a stinkin Harry Potter film! Has she even heard of the Harry Potter fantards and what not? They're really..... quite something, to be blunt.

I'm not a MAAAJOR Simpson's fan, but, still. Pretty ironic, in my opinion.

Anyways, people who constantly quote people like Tourrete's Guy and that Kenny Rogers look-a-like on MADtv would be people that tick me off. >_>

Some guy I used to talk to always greeted me with a random Tourrete's Guy quote. I guess he never found out that that meme was old and tired out before he even SAW it. <_<

Lynnie 10-03-2008 06:46 PM

I may be lucky when it comes to my parents and cartoons. I think I've mentioned it before here somewhere, but both my parents like "classic" cartoons, especially Disney. And my mom's opt to like some of the "modern" cartoons too. My sister and I actually turned her onto Foster's. :smed: My dad on the other hand, only rolls his eyes at our liking a modern non-Disney cartoon. But he's tolerant of it.

What always bugged me about my parents is they always wanted us to be independent of them. As soon as I was 16 and legal, they forced me to get a full time job. Most of my friends just worked part time because, c'mon, we were still in school, still learning about money management, still kids! But I worked 40+ hours a week. And I never saw a cent of the money I earned, it all went strait to tuition at academy. I was terrified, I felt like they had abandoned me to be a slave in someone's household, and I remember crying on many occasions because I just felt so alone and sometimes I messed up because I was still learning and I had no comfort in that situation. As I got older, they'd refuse to help me out in things like getting my car serviced, or finding an apartment, or sorting through tax forms because they kept saying "You aren't going to have us around to help you forever. You need to learn to deal with these things by yourself." So I had to handle many scary situations alone without any help or even advice from them, and in my ignorance, wasted a LOT of time and money. In some lucky situations I had a good friend or two who were more than happy to offer some sort of support. And now, all my closer friends whom I'd be most comfortable asking for such help are thousands of miles away in Texas. So I've turned to just paying strangers to do some things for me if I didn't know how to do it myself. And that puts more stress on my financial situation, which is made even more frustrating knowing my dad could probably help me out in a matter of minutes for free, or at least for a lot less money. ::)

I guess the good side is that I've learned how to do a lot of things by myself that I know many other people, women especially, don't have a clue how to do. But we all need support in tough times, and as long as they are alive and nearby, one's family should be the first to offer it. I shouldn't even need to ask! :sadbendy:

L.G. 10-07-2008 10:34 PM

I am fortunate to have a mother who will still watch Looney Tunes if she has time. She'll even watch Family Guy with me. But when I tried to explain the premise of Foster's to her, there was a few seconds of silence, and then she said, "...OK then." Oh well.

On an unrelated note, between 1:50 and 2:20am today, the fire alarm went off 2 separate times. One minute after everyone has settled in, it goes off again!:scribble: The 2nd one resulted in 3 people getting arrested. While I'm still awake at those times, it was infuriating to have the alarms blaring all of a sudden while I'm minding my own business.

Cassini90125 10-07-2008 10:40 PM

Bleh, we went through something like that once. Every dang morning some lunatic would pull the alarm, usually between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM. This went on virtually every day for months. As far as I know they never caught the SOB who was doing it. :frankiemad:

Sparky 10-07-2008 11:20 PM

One year in college the alarm went off at our dorm constantly in the middle of the night. People were either pulling it or really setting fires. :P

Howard 10-08-2008 04:39 AM

Thank goodness I am a home owner, and no longer have to put up with the alarm thing (unless someone breaks in). I am still recovering from all the alarms I had to put up with in the military (some going off in the wee hours of the morning). I still get the shakes and flashbacks if I hear an alarm someplace.:D

Natty 10-08-2008 04:48 AM

I'm getting tired of companies that promise to send materials within a few days, only to leave us all stressed because those materials haven't been sent a week later!

The guy across the hall got tanked again yesterday. Except for the fire hazard he represents I honestly don't much care if he drinks or not; it's his life, after all, and alcohol is a difficult addiction to overcome. What bothers me about yesterday in particular though is that he was babysitting three young kids at the time. I find it hard to believe that their mother would leave them with him; she can't possibly be unaware of his problems. Maybe she didn't have a choice, I don't know. Regardless, something bad is going to happen in that apartment one of these days. :bloosad:

WiltsAKGirl17 10-11-2008 11:27 AM

Somehow, Cassini... as scary as this sounds, what happpened in the aparment across of your doesn't faze me much. Oh, I'll be the first to echo your sentiments of What in the name of all that is holy was she thinking?! but on that same note...

I live in a place where this would actually be a little more common than you'd care to consider. Even though my town is what's considered damp (alcohol can be imported, but not purchased), alcoholism rates are up there-- anyone else on this forum have to tell the cashier, "Oh yeah, and I want to get a bottle of Listerine" when checking out? I didn't think so. My point here is that anything with alcohol in it that's not too lethal to the human body can and will be consumed for the buzz. Thus Listerine being put behind the counter.

It's actually kinda creepy just how... I suppose rampant is the word I'm shooting for here... alcoholism and (I'm just gonna call this one as I see it; if I offend, my sincerest apologies) drunkeness is where I live. Trust me, nothing saying screwed up quite like walking down the street and being called Princess by a drunk from across the street, growling at a drunk who called you Angel and being proposed to by a drunk.

All of which have happened to me. I hate it so much-- my blinders go up and I'm in total and complete "I don't see you, I don't know you, leave me the [censored] alone" mode. On the second occassion (being called Angel), I was walking around the block from the bank at which I work from doing my typical lunch break windowshopping and I'm walking toward three guys. My mental defense shot up and my eyes went down to the ground in front of me, and for good reason when one of them slurred, "Hi Angel." I didn't answer, but I picked up my pace. Sadly, the guy had to repeat himself. I growled-- literally growled a la Corey Burton's Transformers character-- "Hi" and kept on going. Thankfully that was the end of that.

Am I the only one who thinks it's sad that the only way I can get terms of endearment directed at me is when the other person is wasted? :frankiemad:

Sparky 10-11-2008 08:12 PM

Channel 7 ABC covered today's Bay Area Tarantula Society meeting. I'm afraid they're going to portray us as a group of crazy people instead of hobbyists/whatever. I didn't like the way the interviewer talked to me, he kept wanting me to "admit" to keeping tarantulas, repeatedly asked me "why" I like them (no matter how often I answered) and afterwords told me I was "very funny." I wasn't intending to be humorous. I'm quite sure they're going to use the footage to make fun of us, even if it's part that and part a straight piece. I didn't like that the interviewer and the cameraman snuck behind one of the tables to film a closeup of the interviewer stepping on a tortilla chip, presumably so they can make a joke about that being what a "normal" person would have done to one of the tarantulas or maybe one of the hissing roaches - whatever, it's not respectful. I wish I hadn't talked to them at all. :madwilt:

Cassini90125 10-18-2008 01:09 PM

Despite the fact that I clicked all the right buttons, my retarded laptop failed to disconnect and shut down while I was out earlier. For two hours I was at the park, wandering around, photographing stuff, but as far as my machine was concerned I was logged in here, looking at the front page. Meaningless, I suppose, but annoying nonetheless. At least I now know that the screensaver works. :P

Oh, and I got a letter from Management today, informing me that they'll be replacing the thermostats on Tuesday the 21st. Just great. Now I have to put up with the lazy maintainence guy being in my place. Eh, maybe seeing all the Foster's stuff I have, particularly the framed Frankie pics, will unnerve him and make him work faster and leave quicker. :frankiemad:

A. Ed Edd n' Eddy is no longer listed on CN's video site. I don't understand why the Eds are gone and yet, Dial M for Monkey and the Justice Friends are given their own slots? Their logic is madness! :wiltshock:

B. There is now a tier list for Super Smash Brothers Brawl for those who believe in the tier system (which I don't believe in). Now people are gonna choose characters based on the list, especially online :edmad: :(

I just replied to a post on another forum concerning the upcoming Foster's and EEnE movies. From what I read there, the EEnE movie is scheduled to air in either January or February of next year. So don't worry too much, it's not gone completely yet. ;) :)

Although CN taking them completely off their websight is dumb of them. It's still a CN original. ::)

Given all the stuff CN's been doing the last four years, that move was one of the worst IMO. First they cancel MEGAS XLR, then they introduce more non-animated programing on a cartoon network, and now I can't see Ed Edd n' Eddy on their own website?! Granted, that last bit can be solved by going to Youtube, but still...is it too much to ask to keep Ed Edd n' Eddy videos on their own site?

Great...MEGAS XLR ain't on Toonami Jetstream either.

To make matters worse, my dad brags about his cooking a lot. If anybody else ever cooks, he always complains that it's not as good as his, or it's disgusting, he doesn't like it. >:(

Thanks to all that salt my dad put in dinner, I don't feel so hot right now. :P

The Guitar Hero forums are down for approximately 30 minutes again.
Which, as usual, must be GH-moderator-language for six hours. ::)

Music purists...or, more accurately, music purists who look down upon you if your musical preferences do not accord with their own, or if you admit to liking a band or form of music which they’ve written off as unworthy. Basically, I don’t care if your tastes in music are very focussed and specific – I mean, why should I? It’s your prerogative entirely. But it annoys me so much when people behave as if the music they favour is THE definitive kind, and I hate being sneered at or treated as if my own tastes are somehow inferior just because I like a wide variety of music and will happily own up to liking music or artists which aren’t considered cool or fashionable in certain circles.

Case in point, when I was talking to my brother the other day, he asked me what he could get me for Christmas, and I told him, the New Kids on the Block greatest hits CD which came out earlier this year. And man, did he scoff at me. I should have seen it coming, really. Fair enough if he doesn’t like them, but he doesn’t need to be so arrogant about it. Maybe I am being a bit ungrateful here - I’m sure that he’s still going to buy me the CD, after all. But he does do this to me A LOT, and it probably wouldn’t bother me so much if he himself wasn’t into all these contemporary rock bands which I personally find rather dreary and uninvolving (and yet which he routinely forced me to listen to regardless when we were growing up together, whilst turning his nose up at anything which I liked). They clearly do mean something to him, however, so I happily respect that. Too bad that I don’t receive that same degree of respect in return. I’m not going to claim that NKOTB’s music is any kind of high art exactly (and nor would I make that claim about any of those indie or “alternative” bands which my brother listens to) but it’s fun, catchy music which I genuinely enjoy, and I believe that those arguments are as valid as anything which he could come up in defence of the stuff he likes. I have very eclectic tastes in music – different kinds of music appeal to me for different reasons...but at the end of the day, if you don’t listen to music because you enjoy it, then what is the point?

(Oh, and while we’re at it, maybe someone would care to explain to me just what it is that makes all this so-called “alternative” rock so alternative anyway? Personally, I’ve never been able to see what it is that’s supposed to differentiate it from regular rock. Clearly I’m showing my ignorance here, maybe somebody will help me out.)
