'Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!' - Gone With The Wind (1939) |
Now that I've watched all the currently aired episodes of The Batman, I've started on Teen Titans, all as part of my ongoing "Do Absolutely Anything Other Than Work" initiative.
I've watched half of the first season now, and so far...I like. I can see why the DC Comics hardcore expecting another Justice League didn't go for it, but the blend of stylish action and childish but witty comedy are working for me so far, and whilst the forays into wacky anime visuals don't always work, they definitely establish a unique tone. The characters are really endearing too; Raven has a great deadpan delivery (thank you, Tara Strong! :P) and whilst I feel they place her in a damsel-in-distress role too often (she's a superhero, isn't she?), Starfire is wholly adorable in her oblivious naivete. "I suggest a pizza with pickles, bananas and mint frosting." (*happy, satisfied grin*) You just want to give her a big hug. :P |
I loved that show. I agree Starfire was quite adorable indeed. I'm going to go so far as to say I enjoy the show a lot more than the Wolfman/Perez series it's based on.
For the past 12 hours I haven't watched a whole show. I've only seen snippets of something. I believe the last snippet was either Dr Keith Ablow, a shoo-in for world's ugliest tv doctor, and Extreme Machines. I dunno what Extreme Machines was about, but Dr Keith was talking with a man trying to come to grips with being the product of incest. You know, I think I've put my finger on why I've only been watching snippets. |

By the way, the actual quote is, "Leave it to a wop to bring a knife to a gunfight." Malone says it, so I can see how it gets confusing.

Sir Sean is the best actor ever (salutes) |
Aye, Sir Sean is one of the greats. Who else can make you not care that they're a Scotsman playing and Irishman?
Voyages: Great Ships This episode was about ships of the line. It highlighted Clerk's theory on the changing of naval tactics from broadside to broadside to breaking the line and crossing the stern of enemy lines. It also talked about Nelson's victory at Trafalgar. Great program. |
The Office: Beach Games
For an episode that was NOT the season finale, this episode totally kicked ass. It was amazing! The games were hilarious and Dwight's fire squirm, Harry Potter references, and Pam's big speech at the end. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic and funny as always. |
'Ello, duckies...
Well, I just finished watching the Teen Titans episode "Revolution", and I have to say: what in gawd's name just happened there? :frankiemad:
Let me just clarify here. Earlier on, I said that I'd started watching Teen Titans, and that I liked it; well, scratch that, I positively love it now. I think it's a wonderfully animated, outstandingly acted show that combines action, drama and comedy perfectly to form a supremely entertaining blend, all grounded by five diverse and utterly lovable characters. As such, I appreciate that much of the show's charm comes from its ability to switch between dramatic superhero adventures (such as Season Two's Terra story arc, which had me gripped and frequently quite touched) and crazed comedy (such as the same season's "Fractured", in which a rotund Robin-like imp called Larry turns reality into a crayon drawing). However, Season Three's "Revolution" (in which Malcolm McDowell's psychedelic Cockney villain Mad Mod creates an alternate reality that repeals the Declaration of Independence and turns the city into a Union Jack-tinted dystopia) had me at a loss for words, and not in a good way. Patriotism's all well and good, and as American animators, they're well within their rights to have a pro-US message, but when you have an entire episode centred around the relentless, flippant mockery of another country...I'm sorry, I just find it grating and kind of offensive. I'm not trying to be some uptight, overly sensitive killjoy Brit who can't take a joke; I know that both Mad Mod and the British hell he creates were just stereotypical caricatures, but this episode just didn't find anything new or clever to do with them, and instead went for cheap laughs by propogating the tired cliche of the Brits as buck-toothed, tea-drinking imperialists who talk funny. ::) What really killed it for me, though, was the contrast between that blithe ridicule and the cloyingly earnest, smugly superior way the Titans take inspiration from their American heritage to defeat Mad Mod. Cyborg's "it may not look like it, but this is still America, so I say we vote" line had me almost screaming at the screen ("WE HAVE BLOODY VOTING IN ENGLAND AS WELL!" :frankiemad:), and as for Starfire's little spiel about the birth of democracy...well, it made me temporarily hate Starfire, a character whose sweetness and huggability rivals PPG's Bubbles. Hating Starfire is like wanting to go and shoot a puppy, and I object to any show that makes me want to go and shoot a puppy. :( Like I said, I love Teen Titans, and I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far of the third season ("Haunted", which saw Robin plagued by visions of vanquished archenemy Slade, shocked and impressed me with its dark impact), but "Revolution" left a bad, bad taste in my mouth...:macwor: |
I think the thing with "Revolution" was that just like Mad Mod's prior episode (self titled), it really wasn't trying to aim at any kind of ethnic or personal targets just because the character happens to dress, act, and more importantly THINK in British terminology. I believe that's more of a gimmick thing for him.
Cyborg even said "Yo, I bet even real British people don't like you". One thing Ditchy I think that needs to be realized is that no one in England or any other nation appointed Mad Mod as the representative of all things British, this is merely his own actions, own choices, and own form of representation. It's just like if he was Chinese, or Japanese, or Russian and they did a whole spiel on nation themed gimmicks and imagery through him. Mad Mod thinks he's representing Britain whether anyone wants him to or not, and this is also evident in his whole "teaching" persona. No one appointed him a teacher to anybody, he just imposes his own beliefs and own versions of culture on others. Also thing is like Control Freak, Mad Mod is an exaggeration of an image and not meant to insult others. I myself am a geek and don't take offense to Control Freak's actions or personality. And believe me, there are people who find Control Freak insulting because of his whole unofficial representation of a Star Trek fan. But I understand not everyone will love every episode they see of Titans, I personally just watched the episode and saw it in the same regard I saw "Fracture" or "Episode 257-94"=total wackyness. |
Mr M: I did pick up on Cyborg's line, yeah, but it didn't cover it for me, because as far as I could tell, the writers themselves WERE using Mad Mod as a representative of all things British, at least to an extent. The earlier "Mad Mod" episode worked for me because there Mod's Britishness was presented, as you said, as a gimmick or quirk designed to give the episode a particular visual flavour, but inconsequential in the long run; "Revolution", on the other hand, with its plot regarding Mod's attempt to reimpose autocratic monarchy on July 4th, incorporated political backwardness as a part of his Britishness, and something that in itself needed to be combatted. Of course, you're arguing that those are supposed to be Mod's politics, not Britain's, but my problem is that I don't feel the distinction was adequately made, and when you get to bits like Starfire's little speech about the need to remember the US's proud history that Mod is trying to take away, and how they need to use the spirit of democratic compromise that forged America in order to defeat him, it just started to feel like the whole thing was an exercise to big up America's cultural values at Britain's expense. And that's just not called for. :(
Still, I'm willing to write this one misguided script off as an isolated indiscretion, because the next few episodes I watched won me back over completely; some credit must go to "The Beast Within", which had some great character work and gave Beast Boy a bit of actual edge and depth, but most must go to "Can I Keep Him?", one of the most joyous twenty minutes I can remember spending in recent times. Starfire - bless her, bless her little purple boots, her childlike naivete, her relentless pride in her frankly hideous Tameranian culture, her stilted mutilation of English, her frequent (let's be honest) dumbness, and most of all, her ability to brighten up the screen simply by being on it. SHE. IS. SO. FRICKING. ADORABLE! Watching her crush her beloved pet mutant moth larva with a rolling pin before enthusiastically attempting to lick it clean was simultaneously the most repellent, hilarious and cutest thing I've ever seen; I would honestly want to marry her if not for the fear of having to endure some kind of grotesque backward ritual on her crummy homeworld. Oh, and props also to Killer Moth, who is the man! Mr M, I thought you said his Teen Titans incarnation was a fairly serious villain? He's absolutely hilarious! 8D It's a shame that Thomas Haden Church couldn't return to do his voice after his first appearance, but he's still come up with so many solid gold lines that I don't even notice... "My demands are simple: the city will declare me ruler, the Teen Titans will surrender, and Robin...will take this lovely young lady to her junior prom." "Hey, big fella! Did Killer Moth create you in a lab? Yes he did, yes he did!" "Larva M319, I am your father! Join me, and together we shall, uh...go on a...picnic, or...some such." Anyway, I think I've hijacked this topic enough for now. :bloocross: |
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone
Not really a TV show but not much of a movie either, only like 45 minutes long so. I just bought it on DVD from the anime con I got back from. There's a new "updated" version of the movies with the current voice actors as opposed to the old ones. I personally do like the new actors but the movies are a different story. The first 3 DBZ movies were done so beautifully in music, voice acting, and dubbing that I can't help myself but buy them back in the way I first saw them. In regards to your point of Killer Moth Ditchy, what I meant was compared to how the comic Moth acted and of course his accurate representation in "The Batman", this one is pretty serious. Consider his fight in the basement with the Titans, and his torturing Silkie with the whip and fighting off the Titans on the moth. But like all Titans villains (except Slade and Trigon), he has his own brand of wackyness. I loved when he tried to "cuddle up" with Silkie too and I also missed Church's voice. Though my favorite part of Moth has to be watching him try to comfort his daughter in "Destiny" when she was upset over Fang. There's something so disturbingly hilarious about a man in a killer moth costume trying to comfort his daughter, not to mention the fact she is OKAY with him in the moth suit. "Uh there, there.....uh I'm sure we can find you a new date" 8D |
The last show I watched was Survivor Fiji. I was very pleased the one I was rooting for won.

CSI New york.

Deal or no Deal
... yes, I do like that show, stop making fun of me. |
I just finished Heroes. Ahhh that show owns my life. People getting shot left and right. And I love George Takei's character. And I feel bad for Ted. That show = love.

FOSTER'S LOL
I'm watching it now! I. FOUND. A. CARROT. :cheese: |

I oughtta go watch it. I love knowing some one with the same timezone. |
Heroes: Landslide
CSI Miami: Born to kill Heroes was amazing as always, truly eye popping stuff. I was totally shocked at the character deaths, the revelations, and the bigger build up to this big "booming" finale next week. This show never ceases to surprise me. Takei does a great job as Hiro's father and I LOVE seeing Malcolm McDowell as Lyndermen. I'm slowly starting to enjoy Miami though my number one crime show will always be Law and order, the original. Pretty neat episode though and some pretty gruesome murders with the whole childhood thing CSI was dealing with. |
Scrubs. I loved the bunny guy. I just can't remember the guy voicing him... And I wish I had Turk's PhotoShoping ability. I am going to miss it until they make the next season.

Wacky Races on Boomerang. I was 12 years old when that show first started.
|
Kids Next Door, can't remember the title. But it was where Saturns rings were made out of Rainbow monkeys lol :P

friday night smackdown
yes i watch pro wrestling. honestly i dont know why. |
GrimTheLost: I've not seen the credits for the episode myself, but Wikipedia says that the Rabbit guy was voiced by Scott Menville, aka Robin from Teen Titans. Which, if true, is bizarre, yet utterly awesome. 8D
Apart from that, it was a good two-part finale, with a genuinely intriguing cliffhanger. For me, this season of Scrubs has been clearly the weakest yet - the tone's gotten a lot more flippant, some of the recurring humour's getting a little tired, and certain characters (especially Elliot) aren't as likeable any more - but it's still entertaining, and can still throw up involving plotlines. All told, I'm glad it's coming back for another season, but I'm also glad that the seventh season will both be shorter (18 episodes, compared to the normal 22-25) and that it will be the last one. Let's hope they pull out all the stops and send the show off with a bang... |
Thanks Ditchy, I knew he was familiar, I think he was also on Mission Hill. Thanks again.
And my last tv show was the new episode of Bleach from Japan. I was disappointed that there wasn't enough Quincy fight. But still good to me. |
Heroes: How to stop an exploding man
Amazing:) !!!! What a fantastic way to end the first season/volume. I was so worried I was gonna be majorly depressed by the ending or the "deaths" of certain characters, but this had me more surprised then saddened. Some very interesting choices, and what a clever cliffhanger with Hiro. This was an excellent finale for the show and I can't wait to see season 2. :D I am so buying this show on DVD when it comes out. |

The season finale of 24. I still can't wait to see my questions answered: Did Jack die? Will Agent Doyle take his place in the show? Does Jack Bauer ever have to take a bathroom break? So many questions...

Ben 10 - Tough Luck
I was very excited to see Lucky Girl return, although that Charmcaster was kinda annoying. |
Quote:
I saw that as well, I was surprised that it was 2 hrs and kind of lost for about 5 min since I missed all but the first few hrs of the season. but it was good. I was particularly glad that it was over before the Riches began. Monty :-/ |

But Charmcaster or not, I love any Ben 10 episode that brings Hexx back ;D. He's my favorite Ben 10 villain, next to Kevin 11 and Ghostfreak. |
Quote:
I also wanted to know what happened with Doyle and heck, did Wayne Palmer ever get better? They just left so many plot holes! Arrrgh! I really hope season 7 will be better personally, but this is just me. I don't really think Jack will be killed off (at least not yet) because I think a lot of people would quit watching the show if that happened. |
The Atlanta-N.Y. Mets baseball game last night. Atlanta won, 8-1, and pitcher Kyle Davies hit a 3-run homer off of Mets ace Jorge Sosa.

Bloody hell...
Gah.
Just finished watching my football (soccer to you) team Liverpool in the final of the European Cup against AC Milan...we were all hoping for a repeat of the same fixture two years ago, when we miraculously came back from 3-0 down at half-time to win it. Not this time: 2-1 to Milan. :'( Not even a great match...on balance we were better than them, but we just couldn't score until it was too late. As I said: gah. I'm pretty down now, so I'm going to sleep it off. Maybe next year... |
Quote:
I watched that game too and I don't think Liverpool deserved to win it though they did seem to have more possession and it was ace that little rush of hope when they scored. Still a shame not to see the trophy back here in the north-west, I remember being in Liverpool in 81 watching them bring it home on an open-top bus when they were undisputably Europe's best team. Last TV I watched was a documentary about the crimes of Mao. i tried to watch the Chelsea Flower Show coverage but it stank the house out. |

Scrubs- "My Musical" I have been wanting to see this episode for a while. It makes me appreciate "Avenue Q" a little more.

Heroes
That was a great season finale. I really think the naysayers are being too picky. This September can't come fast enough. And with the spin-off, I'll be in geek heaven. |
