We are already in our second full week of school, for STUDENTS; teachers had to go back a week before that! I have to work at two different schools this year, and drive back and forth between them, and they are a half-hour's drive apart! My schedule is completely screwed up, and I have no breaks at all, other than the time spent driving from one school to the other, which is also my lunch time. I have seventh and eighth grade at one school, then fourth and fifth grades at the other. All the seventh and eighth graders have to take Art, even though the state law only requires them to take it as a voluntary elective, so I get stuck with a bunch of kids who hate it, have no interest in it, and don't want to be there at all. I have to attent PTO meetings and special after-hours functions at BOTH schools, and did I mention that the school I start the day at is a forty-five minute drive from my house? Wanna hear some more good news? The school District does not pay mileage for traveling in between different schools within the district.

I go this upcoming Tuesday, Aug 22!. It will be my first time ever, I'm so exited! Like I said on the other board, I'm ready for 9th grade as far as my age, but I feel, and so does my mom, that I'm not quite ready for 9th, so I'll be going into 8th. I'm terrible in math, but that's because mom forgot how to do all of that real high up math that she used to know, so, I'd rather not say on just how behind I am in that. But I am a fast learer, so I'll have it all down in no time. And mom is a nervous reck on EVERYTHING about me going! If I'll get on the right bus, how am I gonna know what to do once I get there, if there's gonna be bullies, ect, ect....She's so, what's the word? Freaked out about me going to school, and my happieness is supressed by a lingering guilt in the pit of my stomache over going, because of her. She acts like I'm going to war or something. I mean, I need a social life. See, she has this anxiety of being around people, plus we live in a drug filled neighborhood, so I could understand her not wanting me out much. She just does't get out, exept to get groceries of coarse, but she herself doesn't even go to visit her friends who have kids I can hang out with. I guess she has no desire to leave the house, or something. I can't wait to hang out with kids my age, I don't think I've ever done tha-well, I don't wanna make her sound bad, I'm not am I? It's just her depression. Uhhh, I'm really sorry that I'm droning on and on about my problams. I feel kinda dumb, I dunno why.

a) I've already STARTED!! You guys are soo lucky...
b) I'm taking *deep breath* history, geography, algebra II, language arts, biology, health and map studies.(which IS different from geography, at least for me) I'm also learning piano on the side.
c) I don't have a school mascot. I'm homeschooled.

a) when do you go back to school? September 5th:(
b) what classes/courses are you taking? Lots. Orchestra (it's my last year and I'm so sad. I've been taking orchestra for 9 years now.), Participation In Government, Economics, English IV, Pre-Calculus, Gym (I hate that this is a required course!), Jewelry Making, Ceramics, Portfolio In Art (yes, I've always been known to take LOTS of art courses), and a Shakespeare course. I think I got them all. Too bad my school doesn't have a Drama II. I so enjoyed my Drama class last year, and since theatre and acting is what I want to do with my life...it's just too bad. Ah well. That's why I took the Shakespeare course, hoping that we'll get to act out some of his plays:)
c) what's your school mascot? A redskin.

Ouch, pbl. :wiltshock:

Anyway,

a. I started yesterday.
b. Spanish, Art, Literature, blah blah blah.
c. We used to be the injuns... it amazed me how they got away with being called that for so long. [think: 1960.] o_O Now we're just the "indians," complete with a giant chief-head for a mascot. It's still bad, but not *as* bad, I guess? And then I hear next year we'll be the Titans. I was hoping we'd get to be the "Lemonsters," which is a pun on the town's name, or maybe the "Limestones." Having a giant brick of limestone for your school mascot would be so cool.

What? Your school lets you do AP Calculus in the 11th grade, KZ?

Kzinistzerg
08-18-2006, 12:12 PM
Not normally, but I skipped a year of math. Everyone else in my grade is going to be taking Pre-Calculus or Algebra II. This way I can take Calculus II seinor year. I skipped a bunch of stuff, currently I'm only Fifteen.

BlooCheese
08-18-2006, 12:18 PM
Wow! You must be really smart. And your school sounds really good. My high school only teaches up to AP calculus. There's no calculus II.

Kzinistzerg
08-18-2006, 12:26 PM
I think Calculus II is just more theory and stuff, not more math. The school systems NEAR phildelphia are really good ones.

I'm not really that smart... I just learned math early becuase we had this dinky little computer game called 'Math Mission' on the Atari, which is an old computer, and it was basically like taking a long math test with basic functions, just with pretty colors. I played it a lot when I was around first and second grade. That and my dad taught us math with M&M's, so we learned quick.

Trust me, your math teachers could teach integrals with M&M's and the kids'd learn.

BlooCheese
08-18-2006, 01:09 PM
Yeah. All the schools in the East are really good. The schools where I live could use a little improvement.

LOL. My parents taught me math, too, but not with M&M's. Probably would've learned faster with M&M's. Mmmm...Chocolatey goodness...

Kzinistzerg
08-18-2006, 04:33 PM
Exactly: you learn faster with M&M's. I mean, I've known this formula: .5N^2+.5N since I was little, because it was the forumla of how many M&M's were in the triangle. I figured out it was the third diagonal level of Pascal's triangle and all sorts of connections later.

The schools near me need improvement too. The entire educational system has a long way to go before it can be really considered good again.

BlooCheese
08-18-2006, 05:52 PM
Ah! M&M's. How they do improve the world!

a) when do you go back to school? I think I'll be moving in to my COOL NEW APARTMENT (can't wait! with all my friends too!) the week starting September 11th, and classes begin the week after that..
b) what classes/courses are you taking? Music Technology and English Literature - which will both be split up into loads of modules, but so far I don't know what they'll be (interesting, I hope!)
c) what's your school mascot? There is none that I know of, but me and my friends have this little penguin dog-toy thingy that spent the year with us last year - his name is Spike, and he's our mascot! :P

You're not making it sound bad at all Tonya, it must be such a daunting feeling to be moving into that scene for the first time - don't worry about talking about it, it's fascinating I think. I really hope it goes well for you, do tell us all what happens won't you?

I'll to be going to school tomorrow wich will be my very first time going to school ever, but then you already know that! I got to go to Orientation today, or Open House, it's the same thing. Everybody got to look around to see were their rooms were and such. I found my locker, but I cant get the darn thing open! The teacher can open it, but neither me nor mom could get it open. I tried, mom tried, we did exactly how and what the teacher said, turn it one way, go the other way, nothing. So, *sigh* I'll have to make like Mac and carry my backpack everywere with me untill I can get my locker open.

Welp, I got to go to school today! It was great! First of all, I go into the math teachers class when I was realy supposed to go to Homeroom. So, she lead me back to Homeroom were I belonged. Then, after being in Homeroom for a while, a girl in the class threw up and the janitor had to clean that up, some of the boys of whom I'm familiar with from my street were all laughing and kind of making fun of her, I felt kinda bad for her. So then, we go to the gym teachers class. She's cool, alot of folks like her, she reminds me of Wanda Sykes, with that personality and she even kinda looks like her. But of all things, the zipper on my backpack broke so I had to hold my backpack together AND tote the thing around the whole time! After her, we went to math class of wich NOW I was supposed to be, but not much happend there though. Then, we get to science class. The teacher specificaly stated that "You don't talk while I'm talking, and I won't talk while you're talking". Well, RIGHT AFTER that, these two boys in the back were talking to eachother, and giggling. The teacher gets anoyed at them for talking over her, so they stoped for a few minutes, the teacher continued talking, and they started talkig again, and it happend over and over utill they fell asleep. The teacher scolded them, and that's what happend so far. Now, school's finally out. Okay.... EVERYBODY'S bus numbers got mixed up! I thought I was supposed to get on a 10 when it was really a 35, it was a little bit of a mess. But boy was it fun!

Kzinistzerg
08-22-2006, 01:09 PM

Kzinistzerg
08-27-2006, 05:12 PM
Yes. yes i did.

Our homework is to read two books and write three pages (double-spaced) on each one.

It's really, really dumb. people like me who read lots of books are absolutely tortured by having to waste our time in the stuff they make us read, and since the point is to encourage reading, it's worthless. And those who don't read, won't.

PLus I have to do a couple of drawings, but those are fun.

I'm also studying calculus, biology and european history on my own.

Blegh. I'm doing Math 122 over here (which is algebra). I passed it in high school, but I managed to do a fantastic job of forgetting everything I learned in 3 month's break and I just winged it on the placement test. I need to get that one over with in order to pass onto an even harder level of math that's required for the psychology major, statistics. Yay.

"people like me who read lots of books are absolutely tortured by having to waste our time in the stuff they make us read, and since the point is to encourage reading, it's worthless. And those who don't read, won't."

Exactly. Reading was something I LOVED until it became a requirement and an essay. Are you in any honor classes? They usually make you do summer reading if you are. And, yeah, it's like they hand-pick the crappiest books on their lists. I found that it is VERY difficult to come up with 2 pages of writing if your mind is hardly into it.

I totally agree with this. I'm an avid reader, but ask me to write 5 pages (a more realistic size for a term paper) on something I could care less about, and my mind goes blank.
Ask me to write something on Foster's however, and I could go on with a novel. See the difference?

Two pages (or a five paragraph essay) was the requirement for English I Honors when I was a freshman in high school. The requirements have gotten longer over the years, of course. Ick.

Ask me to write something on Foster's however, and I could go on with a novel. See the difference?

Yep. The only time I could remember EVER having written anything I actually poured my heart into was a term paper during my senior year. My teacher gave us a list of books to choose from (if reading should be *required* I strongly believe it should at least be done this way) and I stuck with 1984. We were to contrast and discuss the similiarities of that book with a cartoon, comic, movie, or even another book. I picked Invader Zim and just went crazy with it and got an A. Makes a world of a difference if students are actually interested in what they're writing.

Well, school started on wednesday. Wednesday i got home, fell asleep, woke up at six, ate, fell asleep again, woke up at ten, got some papers signed and went back to bed. Thursday I got home, went on a motorcycle ride, got a new bike helmet, blanket, and some tie-downs, got home at seven, watched fosters (yay!) realised i had no clue how to prove the square root of two was irriational and fell asleep. Friday I got home, read a book, messed around, read some more, ate supper, and stayed up untill 4:30 in the morning reading an incredible book, the second book that has EVER brought tears to my eyes and I do NOT get emotional easily. The last time i cried was when my cat died years ago, the last time i got chosed up was when my other cat died at the end oof june (and only for a bit), and then this morning i woke up at eight, fell asleep, woke up at twelve, got up, and went to New Jersey all day and got home at ten. And missed Fosters.

The time at school was spent in sheer boredom.

MY MATH TEACHER IS TOO ENTHUSIASTIC. He bounces around the room jabbering excitedly about the wonders of calculus ("And then, it's an abstract concept! Isn't that great! Zero's the first abstract conept! It's amazing! WHOOOOOOOOO!")(I added in the WHOOOO part but the rest is almost verbatim...)

My art class sucks royally, but the rest of my day is okay. German class is so very pathetically easy...
